Reproductive Justice Rally Confronts "Walk for Life"Catholic Anti-Choice Marchers Get an Earful from Abortion Rights Activists in San Francisco2024-02-09T08:13:04Z2024-02-09T08:13:04Zen-US
As in previous years, their event attracted members of hate groups. This year, one wore a t-shirt reading "Jews Rape Kids." A private security crew in fluorescent green vests deployed by the Catholic Church made no attempt to remove hate group members who gave nazi salutes in the direction of the abortion rights activists as the march went by.
Later in January, activists for a ceasefire in Gaza disrupted Vice President Kamala Harris during her "Fight for Reproductive Freedoms" appearance in San Jose. Protesters carried placards and banners that read "Bombing Babies is Not Reproductive Justice" and shouted "genocide is not reproductive freedom.”

On the first full day of the WDI conference, transgender-supporting groups raised a ruckus with a speakout and rally in front of the Hilton Hotel on Kearny. Following that demo, a second group of protesters took Kearny, blocking it for several hours. SFPD arrested one protester after the Hilton sign was vandalized and briefly broke out their riot gear. Later that night, the front doors of a WDI-friendly art gallery near the Hilton was treated to a coat of red paint with the words "NO TERFS ON OUR TURF." On September 18, the TERFs staged a small protest in front of SF city hall and were outnumbered by trans rights counter-protesters.

San Francisco Celebrates Pride in Myriad of WaysA Call for Pride to Return to its Roots as a Riot in Defense of LGBTQ+ Rights2023-07-03T04:17:21Z2023-07-03T04:17:21Zen-US
Taking the route of the original San Francisco Pride march held in 1970, organizers Juanita More and Alex U. Inn led a group of about two hundred people in a rally followed by a march that culminated in an afternoon of music and dancing in the streets. Speakers included a reproductive justice advocate who said their movement includes queer and trans rights in addition to abortion rights. Others called for Pride to return to its roots as a riot in defense of LGBTQ+ rights.
Meanwhile, in yet another part of town, members of Starbucks Workers United went on strike. They spoke out in front of the Castro district store about their fight for a union and the company’s decision to ban PRIDE decorations in stores across the country.

Abortion Medication Safe For Now, But Perhaps Not for LongProtests Continue Despite US Supreme Court Allowing Access to Abortion Pill Temporarily2023-04-22T06:51:27Z2023-04-22T06:51:27Zen-US
The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals then scaled back the Kascmaryk ban on April 13, but issued new restrictions on mifepristone, reducing the number of weeks into a pregnancy it could be used and forbidding its shipment by mail. On April 15, a national day of action, demonstrators in Scottsdale, Arizona, protested in front of the headquarters of Alliance Defending Freedom, the right-wing lawers designated a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center that filed the lawsuit in Amarillo. Locally, protests were held in Sacramento, Half Moon Bay, Mountain View, Santa Cruz, Oakland, and other cities.
On April 21, the U.S. Supreme Court extended the stay against any mifepristone bans or restrictions, sending the issue back to the Fifth Circuit for further deliberations. While this is seen as at least a temporary victory, defenders of reproductive justice rights say that extremists will continue try to ban abortion at the federal level and the fight is far from over.

The year 2023 would have been the 50th anniversary of the baseline protections afforded by the Roe v Wade decision, a moment to celebrate a half century of reproductive choice. Instead, women and their allies across the country are pushing back against existing laws and resisting further attacks. On January 21, San Francisco once again turned out to counter-protest the annual so-called "Walk for Life," when thousands of anti-choice activists are bussed in to demand a total end to reproductive freedom. On January 22, dozens of Women's Marches were held in cities throughout the country.

On August 10, McKnight announced that she had filed a federal civil lawsuit against the city and county of San Francisco for the brutal treatment by police and for the paramedic injecting her with a sedative while she was handcuffed. John Burris, who is well known for his work in police brutality cases, is representing McKnight in her civil suit. At a press conference in front of the Chase Center attended by the plaintiff and a dozen supporters, Burris said, “Giving an injection to a protester against her will is shocking and illegal.” He explained that officials violated McKnight’s Fourth Amendment right to control her own body.

Street protests were quickly organized in cities and towns large and small, most at 5pm nationwide.
In San Francisco, people rallied in several locations, including in front of the Phillip Burton Federal Building, at City Hall, and at the intersection of Powell and Market. The rally at the federal building morphed into a march to the cross streets of Market and 8th, where hundreds of demonstrators sat in the middle of the intersection for 49 minutes. The number of minutes was chosen to represent the number of years Roe v. Wade was law of the land.
During that sit-in, an estimated 3,000 people converged on the intersection from multiple marches that had started at different locations. While protesters blocked traffic at the Market Street location, thousands more protested at City Hall and in other parts of the city. About 200 people walked onto Highway 101 to demonstrate even more resistance. The Bay Area cities of San Jose, Berkeley, Oakland, San Jose, San Rafael and others also saw fast response actions on the 24th. Demonstrations continued on a smaller scale throughout the weekend.

Reproductive justice supporters rallied at the Phillip Burton Federal Building/U.S. Courthouse at 450 Golden Gate beginning at 11:30am with street theater, chanting, dance, and music. At 12:30pm they marched with banners a block to the Civic Center where Walk for Life was holding their pre-march event. Pro-abortion attendees created a strong visible presence and held a speak out clarifying their demands.
The counter protest was spearheaded by the National Mobilization for Reproductive Justice—San Francisco with other groups and individuals participating and supporting. This was the 18th year that Walk for Life has marched through San Francisco with permits from the city. There have been counter protests on most of those occasions. Organizers said, “This year of all years, with Roe in danger of being overturned, we head to the streets to rise up for reproductive justice.”
Also, on December 1, speakers at after-dark rallies in San Jose and San Francisco called for bodily autonomy and the freedom to choose when and if to procreate. Mobilization for Reproductive Justice—SF Chapter organized an afternoon speakout at the original Federal Courthouse in San Francisco. At that event, activists cheered and applauded calls to action for January 22, 2020, a day that will mark the 49th anniversary of landmark decision Roe v. Wade.

Moms for Housing Rack Up VictoriesBig Year for Moms Includes Reclamation of Home and Co-founders Winning Elected Office2020-12-01T05:26:37Z2020-12-01T05:26:37Zen-USACCE Action reclaimed possession of a vacant investor-owned property in West Oakland on November 18, 2019. They made it a home for themselves and their children, but it wasn't an easy go. Following legal and public relations battles with real estate speculator Wedgewood LLC and the courts to remain, and despite multiple community solidarity home defense actions, the Alameda County Sheriff's Office arrived heavily armed before dawn on January 14 and evicted the moms.
After nearly a year of struggle, Moms for Housing announced on October 9 that their house on Magnolia Street in West Oakland had been purchased by the Oakland Community Land Trust and will never again sit empty for the sole purpose of increasing the profits of real estate speculators. Moms4Housing co-founder Dominique Walker declared, "This is officially Moms' House."
In November, Dominique Walker and her allies running as the "Right to Housing" slate were elected to the Berkeley rent board. Weeks later, ACCE Director and Moms4Housing co-founder Carroll Fife claimed victory as the councilmember-elect for Oakland's third district.

Breonna Taylor Grand Jury Decision ProtestedDemonstrators in Cities Across the Country Demand Justice for Breonna Taylor2020-10-03T20:22:05Z2020-10-03T20:22:05Zen-US Anti Police-Terror Project writes:
Breonna Taylor was murdered and yet her neighbor’s walls got more justice than Breonna Taylor herself. [On September 23], The Grand Jury returned with an indictment of one single officer with three counts of wanton endangerment for shooting into neighboring apartments — and no charges for the murder of Breonna Taylor.
Apparently being Black, educated, employed and asleep in your own home is justified causation for being shot to death by law enforcement. Breonna Taylor’s story is not unique in America. Since 2015, Black women, who are 13 percent of the female population, account for 20 percent of the women shot and killed by police and 28 percent of the unarmed deaths.
Announcement of the grand jury's decision led to national outrage and multiple protests in the San Francisco Bay Area's larger cities of Oakland and San Francisco, but also in smaller cities including Menlo Park on the Peninsula. In the Central Valley city of Fresno, protesters gathered in front of the Unitarian Universalist Church, a frequent venue for protests, for a vigil in Breonna Taylor's honor.

Specialist Guillen was a 20-year-old soldier in the U.S. Army who was killed by a male soldier at Fort Hood, Texas, on April 22. Her remains weren’t found until June 30. The killer was apparently 20-year-old Specialist David Robinson. Robinson killed himself July 1 as investigators were on the way to speak with him. Robinson’s girlfriend Cecily Aguilar admitted she helped Robinson dispose of Guillen’s body.
Guillen told members of her family she was being sexually harassed. In the context of the Me-Too movement and the groundswell of protest against the killing of George Floyd, the public is making connections, and Guillen’s death has been met with great concern.

Homeless Families Take Action in Time of Housing and Health CrisisLos Angeles Families Reclaim Empty Houses Owned by CalTrans During Pandemic2020-03-24T21:38:09Z2020-03-24T21:38:09Zen-US
The Reclaimers include mothers Martha Escudero and Ruby Gordillo and senior Benito Flores. Impacted by the housing crisis and feeling even more urgency in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, they were inspired by Moms 4 Housing — a group of homeless and housing insecure mothers from Oakland who occupied a vacant, investor-owned property to demand their right to housing. The families, like the Moms, are members of the Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment.
“I don’t feel safe being homeless during this health crisis, and I need a place of my own to protect my children from the virus,” said Reclaimer Martha Escudero. “I’m scared for everyone who is one paycheck away from my situation, who may lose their jobs and then their housing because of the virus. If the state elected officials are serious about protecting the health and welfare of Californians, it should make these vacant homes available for people who need housing now.”

Mothers Fight to Keep Their West Oakland HomeMoms 4 Housing Resist Eviction in Court and Confront Public Relations Attacks by Wedgewood2019-12-30T03:31:59Z2019-12-30T03:31:59Zen-US
After receiving an eviction notice from the house-flipping company Wedgewood LLC on December 3, Moms for Housing declared that they intended to remain in their new home and petitioned the courts to allow them to stay. “I claim right to possession of this home because housing is a human right,” Dominique Walker wrote in a legal filing in Alameda County Superior Court, in an attempt to avoid being evicted on December 17. On December 16, they were able to temporarily block the eviction. At the latest hearing on December 30, the judge did not issue a ruling, but might any day. The moms are calling for a strong showing of solidarity at the house should another eviction order go into effect.
Separately, on Christmas Eve, Moms for Housing held a press conference in their living room to push back against a public relations ploy by Wedgewood — using affiliated Los Angeles nonprofit Shelter 37 to soften the company's image as it attempts to evict the moms. Three Oakland councilmembers expressed support for the moms in their effort to purchase the house with the backing of the Oakland Community Land Trust.

The home was foreclosed upon and then purchased by Wedgewood Properties, a self-described “leading acquirer of distressed residential real estate” which also “manages bulk quantities of non-performing and re‑performing residential whole loans purchased from banks.” Moms for Housing said that Wedgewood has kept the three bedroom one bath renovated property vacant since 2017.
“This home was stolen from the Black community in the subprime mortgage crisis, and it’s been sitting vacant for nearly years,” said Mom for Housing co-founder Dominique Walker. Co-founder Sameerah Karim asks: “Why should anyone — especially children — sleep on the street while perfectly good homes sit empty?”

San Francisco Bay Area Women's Marches Inclusive, ExhiliratingDespite Attempts to Divide the Feminist Movement, Bay Area Takes to the Streets2019-01-26T06:15:26Z2019-01-26T06:15:26Zen-US
The largest marches in the Bay Area were in San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland, and Santa Cruz. There were many other marches in the greater Bay Area including in the cities of Petaluma, Walnut Creek and San Leandro. A San Mateo rally resounded in songs denouncing patriarchy. In the Central Valley, a march in Fresno drew thousands of participants.
Radical Women and the Freedom Socialist Party issued a statement before the marches blaming a mix of forces from the FBI to “so-called men's rights advocates” for trying to prevent a multi-racial, grassroots feminist movement from consolidating and taking off. The joint statement by the two groups called for activists to work together to build a democratic and inclusive feminist movement.
The eyes and ears of the country were on Capitol Hill when Christine Blasey Ford testified in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee against Supreme Court Nominee Brett Kavanaugh on September 27. On the same day, on the other side of the country in Palo Alto, California, neighbors, friends, and colleagues of Dr. Ford rallied to her support with cries of "We Believe Christine!" During the second half of September and into early October, actions in Berkeley, San Francisco, San Mateo, Mountain View and elsewhere demonstrated the Bay Area's commitment to supporting victims of sexual assault and defeating the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh as well.
On September 23, at least 2,000 people flocked to the busy El Camino Real intersection in front of Stanford University. What was originally planned to be a small silent vigil grew to a noisy outpouring of support for the Stanford-connected Dr. Ford. The same day, speakers at a demo in San Francisco said Kavanaugh’s behavior disqualifies him from an appointment to Supreme Court and called for the elimination of the Republican rape culture. In Berkeley, By Any Means Necessary (BAMN), a national organization dedicated to building a new mass civil rights movement, organized a march and rally on the UC campus on September 27. A major demonstration in the nation's capital will be held with a sister rally in San Mateo on October 6.
BAMN writes: Today, Kavanaugh’s nomination presents a test of the #Metoo movement that has come forward against Trump’s misogyny, his promotion and defense of sexual assault that has been central to his political platform. As long as Donald Trump, as Abuser-in-Chief, remains in office, misogynist men like Kavanaugh will feel they have a green light to attack, harass, objectify and abuse women.

The vigil began near the MacArthur BART gates with chants of “No Justice! No Peace!” and “Justice for Nia!” Speakers called on the crowd to take action to defend and protect Black women, and support the grieving family of the Wilson sisters. As demonstrators marched from the murder scene towards downtown Oakland, BART police announced an anonymous tip led to the arrest of John Cowell at the Pleasant Hill BART Station.
Activist and Oakland Mayoral candidate Cat Brooks said the attack was not “random,” but part of the year-long invasions by white supremacists and fascists coming to the Town. The stabbing occurred on the eve of a planned white supremacist “Proud Boys” gathering scheduled for Berkeley on August 5. At one point during the march, protesters chased a group of men identified as white supremacists. Witnesses said protesters fought with the men until the police stepped in. Police escorted at least one alleged Proud Boy from the scene. Police also arrested a Black male demonstrator. Police scuffled with protesters while attempting to lead the patrol car away. Some protesters threw bottles and other objects at police.
