Taking Direct Action Against US Support for Israel's War on GazaActions for Gaza: Blockades, Occupations, Banner Drops, Graffiti, Smashed Windows, Sabotage2023-12-12T10:44:39Z2023-12-12T10:44:39Zen-US
Israel would not be able to continue its genocidal war on Gaza without military and political support from the United States. The US provides Israel weaponry and munitions to carry out its onslaught. The US feeds the IDF military intelligence gained via satellites and drones flying over Gaza. The US covers for Israel on the global stage with UN Security Council vetoes against ceasefire resolutions. US businesses profit from the current war and never-ending occupation.
Taking local resistance to the next level, protesters in Northern California have engaged in a number of direct actions aimed at disrupting business as usual, targeting those most responsible, and raising the profile of the call to free Palestine. While President Biden was in San Francisco for the APEC Summit, activists shut down all westbound lanes of the Bay Bridge, and others hung a banner on Highway 101 between the airport and San Francisco. A US military vessel destined to deliver weaponry to Israel was blocked from leaving the Port of Oakland for the better part of a day. The San Francisco office of US defense contractor Lockheed Martin was locked down. Communiqués posted on Indybay claim sabotage of train lines in multiple cities, as well as a water main at a pro-IDF fundraiser. Others have taken it upon themselves to smash windows of a military recruiter, banks, and businesses with ties to the Israeli war machine. Banner drops and graffiti in solidarity with the Palestinian people have gone up all over.

In two months, more than 17,000 Gazans have been killed, tens of thousands wounded, huge swaths of infrastructure turned into rubble, and the vast majority of the population displaced, on the verge of famine and widespread disease. And yet, on December 8, the US once again used its UN Security Council veto on behalf of the State of Israel, blocking a ceasefire motion that had the support of over 100 countries. The carnage in Gaza continues, with only a fraction of desperately needed humanitarian supplies allowed into the territory.
Millions of people worldwide are standing in solidarity with Palestinians, starting with emergency rallies the day Israel's relentless bombing in Gaza began. Marches and rallies have continued ever since, demanding a ceasefire, the end of US military support for Israel, and that Palestine be freed once and for all. Every week there are more protests in cities large and small, including in many that have never seen a pro-Palestinian demonstration. City governments in Richmond and Oakland have passed motions urging a ceasefire. In San Francisco, tens of thousands have marched against Israel's war on Gaza.

Climate Activists Call for Escalation in the Fight for the FutureThree Activists Detained at Climate Protest for Crossing Beale Air Force Base Gate2023-11-01T06:34:25Z2023-11-01T06:34:25Zen-US
At sunrise on October 19, youth climate activists gave a speech decrying the imperialist military-industrial complex, responsible for countless ecological atrocities, energy consumption, and carbon emissions. The speech started with a youth activist giving a statement of solidarity with the people of Palestine and saying that the climate crisis can only be won when everyone is free, including the people of Palestine. Another youth activist called out Beale Air Force Base commander Geoffery Church for his empty promises about "listening to the community" and wanting to make a base that works on "community values." The youth activist declared the entire US military an imperialist machine that destroys the environment and is inherently antithetical to community values.
A call went out for an immediate escalation in the fight for the future. Four activists, banners in hand, then marched across the demarcation line at the Schneider gate of Beale Air Force Base. Military police attempted to forcibly remove the activists from the base by shoving and pushing them back towards the line. Three were detained and marched into the gate building, where they were held for over an hour. Outside of the gate, eight other climate activists renewed the blockade in front of the now-closed gate and held the line until those detained were released. Two were charged with trespassing.

Israel Decimates Gaza, Nearly 2M Palestinians DisplacedSeven Weeks of Israeli Blockade and Bombings Leaves Gazans Struggling to Survive2023-11-01T05:39:01Z2023-11-01T05:39:01Zen-US
Israel retaliated with a total blockade of Gaza cutting off food, water, electricity, and fuel supplies, collectively punishing Gaza's 2.3 million residents. In the first week alone, Israel dropped over 6,000 bombs and missiles on the Gaza Strip, more than the US dropped on the entire country of Afghanistan in any given year. The bombings have continued since, nearly 24 hours a day. Israel ordered all residents of northern Gaza to move south, and hundreds of thousands did at first while others tried to hold on, fearing a second Nakba and that they would never be allowed to return to their homes. Israel's far-right government ministers have openly advocated for genocide and mass expulsion of Palestinians, suggesting that all Gazans be permanently pushed into Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, a "voluntary resettlement."
The level of destruction in Gaza in just seven weeks is staggering. Over 1.7 million Palestinians have been displaced and face serious malnutrition and dehydration, as well as bombings in southern Gaza, which was promised by Israel to be safer. Nearly 15,000 have been killed, a third of whom are children, with tens of thousands injured. The actual death toll is certainly higher with many unaccounted for, likely buried under rubble as Israel levels entire neighborhoods. Around 50% of all residential housing in the strip has been destroyed. Water wells and other critical infrastructure has been permanently destroyed. Israel has killed 108 UN staff, at least 200 medical and aid workers, and over 65 journalists. It has bombed and raided hospitals, schools, churches, mosques, UN facilities and more, often where war refugees were seeking shelter from bombings elsewhere, allowing in barely enough supplies to keep the population from completely starving to death. Communications networks and internet access have gone dark repeatedly. Fears of an epidemic outbreak and general health emergency grow as the majority of hospitals have been forced to close and conditions continue to deteriorate.
Additionally, thousands of Gazans who worked in southern Israel were imprisoned, with multiple reports of beatings and denial of food and water. In the West Bank, Israel has abducted/arrested over three thousand Palestinians and killed more than 200. Israeli settlers have taken the war as a green light to attack Palestinians and have killed at least eight, including one child.
A four-day truce finally began on November 24, with Israeli hostages expected to be traded for imprisoned Palestinian women and children, tried in military courts without standard civil defense procedures, if not held without charges in "administrative detention." It is expected that more aid trucks will be allowed to enter the strip during the truce, but Israel has promised to continue its relentless war on Gaza once the truce ends.

Whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg Passes Away at 92Pentagon Papers Leaker, Anti-War Activist Daniel Ellsberg Leaves Lasting Legacy2023-06-20T01:16:31Z2023-06-20T01:16:31Zen-US
He was best known as the whistleblower who leaked the Pentagon Papers to news outlets in 1971, exposing damning information about the Vietnam War that Washington had concealed from the American people and the world. Ellsberg became an outspoken anti-war campaigner who issued stark warnings about nuclear weapons and the detrimental impacts of the military-industrial complex.
In a 2019 interview, Ellsberg said, "My experience with the Pentagon Papers showed that an act of truth-telling, of exposing the realities about which the public had been misled, can indeed help end an unnecessary, deadly conflict." "This example is a lesson applicable to both the nuclear and climate crises we face," he added. "When everything is at stake, it is worth risking one's life or sacrificing one's freedom in order to help bring about radical change."

An international day of action was held on May 5 against a US nuclear submarine base in the Australian Port Kembla. One rally took place at Port Kembla. A solidarity rally was held in San Francisco against the base and the Australian, UK, and US military alliance (AUKUS). Several speakers representing Veterans for Peace, union activists, and others spoke of their opposition to the build-up of a war with China, along with using Australia as a pawn in that effort.

Counter demonstrators said Russians are committing genocide and called for more weapons for Ukraine. Along with signs asking for war planes and long range missiles, a sign said "Peace with Russia is Genocide." They displayed a Ukrainian flag emblazoned with Ukraine's patron saint, Saint Olga of Kyiv, holding an anti-tank missile launcher.
March 19 was the twentieth anniversary the US invasion of Iraq, when protesters shut down downtown San Francisco.

After music by the "Musicians Action Group" and speeches, the demonstrators marched to United Nations Plaza and held an additional rally in front of the statue of Simon Bolivar, a hero of South America's liberation struggles.
Prior to 1959, Cuba was ruled by US backed Fulgencio Batista who sat atop an American underworld-controlled empire of gambling, prostitution, and a tourist industry catering to the wealthy. The country also hosted corporations such as AT&T and Texaco. During the Spanish Civil War, while Hitler supplied Franco with tanks and bombers, Texaco supplied his armies with the fuel to run them.
The Cuban revolution in 1959 committed, in US eyes, the crime of expelling corporate America. Also, the establishment of a national health care system and free schooling showed Cuba as an example of a socialist alternative.
Bay Area Ukrainians and those in solidarity with them protested in San Francisco on February 26 and 27. Many of them agree with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's calls for maximal NATO involvement. On March 6, Code Pink and other anti-war organizations have called for a Global Day of Action to protest the invasion, while also pointing to NATO expansion on Russia's border as having contributed to the crisis. The complicated politics of the invasion have exposed rifts across the political spectrum and led to some odd alliances. As the danger of a wider war looms, no one is sure how it can be stopped or where exactly it all ends.

Speakers at the rally co-hosted by the Yemini Alliance Committee (YAC) said that the US government is complicit in the devastation to life and land in Yemen as it continues to arm Saudi Arabia and the UAE. The bombs were US made by General Dynamics and Lockheed Martin.
Year after year, the crisis in Yemen worsens. Commenting on the deaths of the children, YAC wrote: "Can you imagine sending your children off to school on a bus, for them to only be returned in body bags? Those culprits have never been held accountable. When will human life be more important than profits?"

Jeremy Corbyn said that the humanitarian disaster of “cholera, of covid, of hunger, of poverty, of the bombing of schools and hospitals, of the loss of so many children’s lives, and the pollution that the detritus war will leave for decades to come, is entirely of human activity and massive arms sales to Saudi Arabia and other countries in the region that have taken part in this war.” Dr. West vowed that Yemeni’s humanity will never be rendered invisible.
In San Francisco, speakers addressed the horrors of the war, saying that the conflict has been unbelievably under-reported in the press. The civil war in Yemen began in 2014, and foreign intervention began shortly after when Obama began selling bombs to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. "It's been almost 6 years since the US has been fueling the war on Yemen; the attacks are relentless," said one speaker to a crowd of peace activists in front of the Federal Building. Around the world more than 385 organizations across 25 countries took part in the day of action.

The killer was apparently 20-year-old Specialist David Robinson. Robinson killed himself July 1 as investigators were on the way to speak with him. Robinson’s girlfriend Cecily Aguilar admitted she helped Robinson dispose of Guillen’s body.
Guillen told members of her family she was being sexually harassed. In the context of the Me-Too movement and the groundswell of protest against the killing of George Floyd, the public is making connections, and Guillen’s death has been met with great concern.

Starting in Marin, the caravan, complete with its "Ghandhimobile Caboose,” crossed the Golden Gate Bridge, then wound its way past the San Francisco National Cemetery, down a section of Lombard Street and up to the Feinstein mansion. Gathering in an adjoining cul de sac, the group held a press conference and created a memorial altar for the all the war victims of nearly 20 years of wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Yemen, Syria, Libya, Somalia and elsewhere.
Later the same afternoon in San Jose, another peace caravan focused on the demand for human rights to health, housing, education, a living wage and all the components of a dignified life. Demonstrators gathered at a major San Jose intersection that has come to be known as Peace Crossroads. There, they collected cash donations in a bucket and attached banners and large peace symbols to about a dozen cars. From the Peace Crossroads, they took their colorful caravan through the streets of downtown San Jose. They ended their journey at the Roosevelt Community Center where they met with volunteers who provide services for a nearby homeless encampment, shared solidarity and contributed the money they collected.
Organizers of both demonstrations said their goal was to counter the usual militaristic Memorial Day rhetoric and that they work so there will be no more war dead to be memorialized.

Hong Kong in Near Shutdown, Mask Ban BackfiresIn San Francisco, Hong Kong Club Members Wear Masks, Wave U.S. flags2019-10-05T14:53:40Z2019-10-05T14:53:40Zen-US
On September 29 in San Francisco, hundreds gathered in the Civic Center Plaza for a rally sponsored by the Northern California Hong Kong Club. Many wore masks and waved U.S. flags. At nearby Stanford University, where security was tight, emotional outbursts temporarily interrupted an academic panel "Hong Kong: A City in Turmoil." Both events were timed to coincide closely with the 70th anniversary of the People's Republic of China.
Some critics of the Hong Kong "pro-democracy" protests, that have now spread to several large cities in the United States, say that Washington and the Pentagon would like nothing more than to see a version of the Tiananmen Square incident of 1989. Despite claims in the press about the protesters being advocates of democracy and freedom, critics insist that demonstrators carrying U.S. flags are asking the the ironically tyrannical President Trump to come to their aid. They fear that by painting the protests as pro-democracy, mainstream media is setting the stage for a major anti-Chinese campaign that could lead to hostilities or even war.

The NDAA is expected to be finalized by mid-September.
The conflict in Yemen began in 2014. The fighting in the Arab world’s poorest country has killed thousands of civilians and created the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, leaving millions suffering from food and medical supply shortages.

On January 22, U.S. Vice President Mike Pence made a phone call to opposition politician Juan Guaidó, essentially offering him the presidency of Venezuela. The next day, Guaidó swore an oath in which he appointed himself "Interim President of Venezuela." Minutes later, Donald Trump officially recognized that self-appointment, in effect instigating a coup against the Bolivarian government of Nicolás Maduro. Since then, many corporate media outlets have been supporting a coup, flooding the air waves and Internet with stories about chaos, poverty, corruption, and violence in Venezuela, exclusively covering anti-government marches, and showing clips of world leaders calling for the overthrow of the Venezuelan government.

14 Million Yemenis Face Famine and DiseaseFollowing Protests, Pelosi Co-Sponsors Bill to End US Support of Saudi-Led War2018-11-25T11:11:31Z2018-11-25T11:11:31Zen-US
The US has been backing the Saudi-led war in Yemen providing mid-air refueling to Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates jets that conduct airstrikes. In addition, the US provides help with logistical and intelligence support. The bombing campaign supports a blockade that prevents food, medical supplies and clean water from reaching the people of Yemen. Bombs that strike Yemenis are made in the US and the Saudi-led coalition has killed over 50,000 Yemenis.
On November 20, San Francisco activists and members of the Yemeni community protested US involvement in the Saudi-led War on Yemen in front of the city’s Federal Building where Nancy Pelosi has an office. Their protest followed a similar action in San Francisco's Union Plaza earlier this month.
Speakers at the rallies urged Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi to support H Con Res 138, a measure that would end US support for the Saudi-led war in Yemen. While Pelosi condemned the Republican effort to quash the bill, it was only after protesters demonstrated that she agreed to be a co-sponsor. The measure was blocked largely by a Republican majority, but will likely see a vote again in January when Democrats are in control.

Ringing a Bell for PeaceCelebrating Veterans Day in the Style of Original Armistice Day2018-11-14T11:12:46Z2018-11-14T11:12:46Zen-US
Khalilah Ramirez is the creator of the Dance of Peace; one her goals in developing the performance was to make creating peace a living activity. She and Sharat Lin performed the dance, a form of expression that connects the mind, body and the earth. The Raging Grannies of San José led communal singing. A guitarrón mexicano and horn combo added to the entertainment portion of the event.
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI. Congress voted to change the name of Armistice Day to Veterans Day in June 1954. President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued a proclamation acknowledging that the United States had been engaged in two wars since Armistice Day was first observed and, with that, the annual observance became Veterans Day. Veterans for Peace wants the country to return to the original sentiment, and once again celebrate a day calling for an end to all war.

Israeli soldiers fired live ammunition into a crowd of tens of thousands of Palestinian protesters who gathered in Gaza near the heavily fortified border with Israel. The Palestinian Health Ministry reported that Israeli soldiers killed 58 Palestinians, including six children and four officers of the Palestinian Ministry of Interior and National Security, injuring 2,771. About ten Palestinian journalists were injured by Israeli fire while covering the Israeli aggression against Palestinian protesters along the Gaza border.
The following day, May 15, over 1,000 Palestine supporters turned out in San Francisco to mark the 70th anniversary of the Nakba. The event, both a demonstration and a commemoration, was held outside the Israeli consulate, and was followed by a march to the Federal Building. Solidarity actions were also held in San José and Santa Cruz.

U.S. Missile Strikes on Syria Ignite Bay Area DemonstrationsCodePink Protests Syrian Bombings at San Francisco Homes of Feinstein and Pelosi2018-04-19T08:02:01Z2018-04-19T08:02:01Zen-US
CodePink members said that they targeted the private homes of Feinstein and Pelosi for protest because the U.S. disrupted neighborhoods and people in Syria and their goal was to bring the struggle to the political leaders' own neighborhood. Other anti-war protest organizers stated that the Pentagon and Trump administration are racing towards an expanded war in Syria, with strikes that violate international law, take countless lives, and boost Qaeda-affiliated armed groups that could lead to an even wider regional war.
On April 15 in Oakland, speakers at a previously scheduled protest to "end all wars at home and abroad" denounced the Trump administration ordered Syrian strikes. That demonstration started at Lake Merritt Amphitheater with a march that led to a rally at Oscar Grant Plaza amphitheater.
