Two homeless memorials were held on December 21st in Santa Cruz, one by "service providers", the other by Food Not Bombs. I reprint the flyers I distributed at these events as well as the December 25th Xmas dinner organized by Joe Schultz, Food Not Bombs, Friends of Xmas, and the inevitable Steve Pleich....

135_scan_20231111.jpg
by Robert Norse
The Santa Cruz City government and the Israeli regime are both creating and criminalizing homeless refugees. This flyer--self-explanatory--was distributed at two U.S./Israel Out-of-Gaza rallies as well as at the Town Clock and downtown, among unhoused folks....

documentUpdated Santa Cruz Free Guide Downloadable in Hard Copy
sc_free_guide.pdf
by santacruzfreeguide.org/ (comments by Norse)
After an exchange of ,e-mails and phone messages, the creators of the Santa Cruz Free Guide [SCFG] released an updated edition. I reprint the hard copy sent me a week ago. The update may not be a finished one. In any case, I encourage readers to share their experience accessing these services to save weary future folks in need unnecessarily futile efforts....

135_scan_20230913__3_.jpg

documentStreet Shit Sheet #172: Update the Outdated SC Free Guide !
street_shit_sheet_172.pdf
by Robert Norse
A few more blurbs from the byways along with a reprinted copy of the badly outdated Santa Cruz Free Guide on the reverse side. Guide manager Evan Morrison and his staff, have so far maintained silence around concerns that their "Guide" is leading folks to closed services, full waiting lists, and other dead ends--truly needing updating....

documentReturn of the Santa Cruz Street Shit Sheet
street_shit_sheet.pdf
by Robert Norse
Absent for nearly fifteen years, the Santa Cruz Street Shit Sheet is back with issue #170. The Shit Sheet published pretty frequently in the late 80s and early 90s, and sporadically since in the early 2000s. Whether it will continue to regularly appear is still an uncertain and open question, but here is a contemporary sample of the kind of news and views it covers....

documentViolence, Sweeps, and Seizure--Escalating SCPD Policy
aug_20_flyer.pdf
by Robert Norse
In spite of court decisions and massive COVID-era appropriations as well as decades of protests and petitions, police have continued and seem to be escalating "drive 'em out of town" sweeps with new cruelties and illegalities. Yesterday at the Mime Troupe, I passed out a flyer denouncing unusually explicit and recent threats, seizures, and citations attacking each encampment as it arises....

videoMayor Keeley Targets the Homeless with Surprise Traffic Median Motion (video/mp4 165.0MB) by Santa Cruz News
At the March 14th meeting of the Santa Cruz City Council, Mayor Fred Keeley introduced a surprise motion targeting homeless residents who panhandle on traffic medians (watch video below). Keeley's motion was not included anywhere in the meeting's agenda packet, he spontaneously inserted it into an unrelated vote on item #15, which concerned bicycle safety improvements and the removal of automobile parking on Laurel Street. Keeley stated the motion as follows: "Add additional direction that th...

textFood Not Bombs announces Meals-at-City-Hall today after top cop bans Lot #10 serving by Keith McHenry (posted by Norse)
Harsh rainy weather, the City's failure to provide adequate 24-hour Warming Center facility, and the Chief Escalante's recent ban on serving in the protected parking garage #10 have prompted the free survival food service to move to City Hall today and likely during future rainy days until reasonable alternatives are allowed....

textRV Human Rights Activists Challenges Santa Cruz City Police Violations by Reggie Meisler (posted by Norse)
Reggie Meisler, civil liberties defender of unhoused rights, is waiting for an answer to his January 9th letter to Santa Cruz City Manager Matt Huffaker, Mayor Fred Keeley, Police Chief Rudy Escalante, and the S.C. textLetter to Mayor Brunner on City Council's Latest Homeless Hayride by Robert Norse
I wrote a letter to Mayor Brunner regarding the City's end run around human decency in the Benchlands. Item 19 is a double-barreled blast at those outside--showcasing an empty report that has no significant expansion of shelter for the planned Benchlands demolition. As well as a seizure of homeless funding--using it as demolition money....

imagePreparing to Defend the Likely Sweeps
480_scan_20220704.jpg
by Robert Norse
We did a little tabling downtown yesterday, distributing flyers and circulating petitions encouraging activists to rise up again in support of basic justice for those outside. We were testing the waters for Pacific Ave. passersby. The literature challenged the false "all is well--we've got shelter & housing for those outside" narrative. The flyers and petition set out a more truthful counter-narrative. Our ultimate goal is to provide support for resistance to Benchlands removal at the end...
