audioSanta Cruz Public Safety Committee Meeting on SCPD Spying (audio/mpeg 4.4MB) by Vinny Lombardo
A special meeting of the Public Safety Committee took place March 29, to discuss the results of the Police Auditor's investigation into SCPD infiltration of Last Night Parade planners (the report found that the police spy operation "more than likely" violated the civil rights of parade organizers), and draw up a new policy governing the SCPD's use of surveillance....

On Wednesday, March 29th, hundreds of students from Santa Cruz High, Santa Cruz Community, Habor, Aptos, Soquel and Cesar Chavez (Barrios Unidos) left class at 10:00am to meet at the Clock Tower and march to the Santa Cruz County Courthouse. They marched for immigrant rights and justice and against HR4437. After the walkout and march, I went over to Santa Cruz High and spoke to a small group of students. Ricky, a student at Santa Cruz Community and Edwin, a student at Santa Cruz High, dis...

audioAccounts of Police Violating Civil Rights of Students in Watsonville on 3/27 (audio/mpeg 6.4MB) by students
On Monday, March 27th, 2006, high school students went on strike to protest against HR 4437. In Watsonville, police responded by violating the civil rights of students, including detaining students at 2:00pm for "walking out of school" even though their school, Renaissance High School, had gotten out at 1:15pm. Another student at Renaissance was arrested after refusing to get on a bus. She was already out of school and did not walkout. (Audio is 18 minutes and 30 seconds)...

audioLast Night Parade Organizers' Civil Rights Violated by SCPD Spying, Report Says (audio/mpeg 9.1MB) by Vinny Lombardo
Results of the independent investigation into Santa Cruz police spying on New Year's Eve parade planners were made public March 21. Bob Aaronson, the independent police auditor, concluded in his report that SCPD officers may not have violated any local laws or policies by infiltrating the group, but the undercover operation more than likely violated the civil rights of parade organizers. The report also said that while the organizers contemplated an act of civil disobedience, the minor infrac...

audioSpeakers from Santa Cruz Rally Against HR 4437 (audio/mpeg 2.7MB) by Vinny Lombardo
About 500 people rallied at the Santa Cruz County Building, before a march to Beach Flats Park, to express outrage against HR 4437; one of many anti-immigrant bills making its way through Congress. HR 4437 would make it a felony offense to be in the U.S. without proper documentation. This would push undocumented immigrants further underground, and increase the potential for exploitation by employers. This bill would also criminalize nurses, teachers, clergy, social workers, and anyone else wh...
