On May 22, 2007, after a year-and-a-half of organizing and mass actions, UC Berkeley, UC Santa Cruz, and UC Santa Barbara custodians declare victory, winning substantial wage increases! Also part of the equity fight, UC Irvine groundskeepers win their in-sourcing campaign! The custodian pay equity campaign helps push UC to settle additional increases for AFSCME low-wage workers statewide – marking a step toward statewide equity in our contract....

Decades have passed & generations of students have moved through UCSC without experiencing the positive impact of Ethnic Studies. UCSC has & continues to ignore the needs of a “diverse” student population & California overall. We are left to attempt to understand our his/herstories, as well as our individual & communal experiences within the context of that his/herstory, without the tools Ethnic Studies offers....

Alette was targeted as a Black woman and a central organizer of the student speak-out that took place on Oct. 18, 2006, resulting in her arrest. The Office of Doug Zuidema, Student Judicial Affairs, has now announced its intention to suspend Alette for a period of 3 years—essentially a sentence of expulsion for the third year student. Academics don't like academic boycotts. In fact, we detest external limits of any kind. We treasure our own universities for offering precious sanctuary for critical debate (even though they rarely do) and we don't like to see any of them banned, even for ostensibly laudable reasons.
