Violence-Ridden Communities Demand City Plan to End Killings
Residents of some of San Francisco's poorest and most neglected neighborhoods gathered at City Hall yesterday to demand a comprehensive plan to end the violence plaguing their communities. A spate of killings swept across Bayview-Hunters Point, Western Addition, and Visitation Valley in recent months - killings community members argue could have been prevented with more city involvement. Participants in yesterday's event presented a list of simple, easy to implement requests to city officials...

Disability Perspective: Supe. Adapts Southern Civil Rights Strategy On Disabled Access
An amazing political evolution surfaced at the Oct. 19th Land Use Committee, when the agenda veered away from a simple item on elevator safety and elevator access. It was supposed to make the Planning Code conform to the Building Code, to the state of California code, and to federal laws. Suddenly, it became a monologue on whether there should be complete disabled access, whether there are enough disabled people to risk hurting the scenic views of the socially and politically influential, and...

Newsom Advocates ‘Housing-First’ Policy for Homeless Families
Facing dwindling state and federal funding to combat family homelessness, Mayor Gavin Newsom announced at yesterday’s State of the City address he plans to institute a ‘housing-first’ policy to bring San Francisco’s families in off the streets. Administration insiders say this policy will take the form of a city-funded rent subsidy program. While the details have not yet been finalized, it appears likely the program will provide subsidies of up to $500 per month to enable families in shelters...

Public outcry blocks GOP budget cuts
Massive public pressure forced the Republican leadership in the House of Representatives to abruptly delay action last week on major slashes in human services programs. The slashes, contained in a budget amendment, would have increased mandatory cuts from $35 billion to $50 billion in health care, Medicaid, energy assistance, food stamps, student loans and child care, while maintaining $70 billion in tax cuts for the rich....
