textResponse: “Drought or no drought, we all must conserve water” by fake name
This is an op/ed in response to “Drought or no drought, we all must conserve water” that originally ran in the San Jose Mercury News on April 24th 2007. Although the everyday people need to conserve water it won't do much because such a small percentage of water is used domestically, most is used to support agriculture. In order to impact our already warming planet in a positive manner there must be a collective effort to conserve water and use it more efficiently....

textRon Dellums Gets Oakland Moving Again by J. Douglas Allen-Taylor, Beyond Chron -repost
We have begun hearing the beginnings of low rumblings of criticism over the early actions—or inactions—of the administration of Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums. These criticisms peaked, in chorus, on the passage of Mr. Dellums’ first hundred days in office, the traditional point—since the frenetic time of Franklin Roosevelt in seeking to roll back the Depression, I believe—of marking the initial accomplishments of an administration. textCapitalism and the Consequences of Biofuels by Revolution Newspaper
In today’s world the use of biofuels has led to horrific consequences for the people of the world and the environment. For example The division of the world -- between a handful of rich countries consuming most of the world's resources and the rest of tha planet, has meant that the growing of crops for fuel—mostly for export to Europe, Japan and the United States—is being done on large-scale plantations in the third world. In order to make room for these plantations ancient forests are bein...

Turkish hazelnut estimates for 2006-2007 show a significant excess supply, putting huge downward pressure on prices of the key agricultural and export commodity and threatening the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of farmers. This will be the second blow to Turkish farmers after excess supply last year led to hazelnut prices plummeting to around 2.5 YTL per kilo from the previous year’s level of 7 YTL....

textGermany: Guantánamo detainee Murat Kurnaz and the politics of the SPD by wsws (reposted)

by Revolution Newspaper
The Botero paintings must be experienced. They are worth traveling to see. The prisoners’ huge bodies dominate the large yet claustrophobic canvases. They endure pain that is palpable to the viewer...yet these men convey a strength and a dignity that stays with you.
