UCSC Earth Summit - A Crack in the Facade As tempting as it would be to say the time spent attending UCSC’s 7th Annual Campus Earth Summit would have been better spent napping in a redwood grove or bird watching, this simply wouldn’t be fair. There were after all, some worthwhile highlights of the day including the adjective-loaded “Delicious, organic, locally produced lunch” and the unspoken but palpable tension between the mainstream environmentalists who put the summit on, and the more radical eco folks who showed up....

Police Surveillance at the Farmers Market Drum Circle 
Perched in the stairwell of the UCSC extension building, Santa Cruz police were filming the drum circle and Food Not Bombs at the Farmers' Market on Wednesday, Jan 30, presumably with regards to the new "15 minute parking lot rule". The filming was interrupted when a revolutionary war era citizen who holds the belief that people should still have rights (the right to peaceably assemble) began waving a "Don't Tread On Me" flag in front of the camera. Local ACLU Statement on the Parking Lot Panic Law The Santa Cruz chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union in one of its rare statements defending civil liberties locally issued the following statement at http://www.aclusantacruz.org/node/154.

As you literally may of heard, on January 23rd, the Santa Cruz Trash Orchestra and fellow drummers provided rhythm for the weekly community gathering in the Cathcart parking lot during the Santa Cruz Farmers Market. A vegetarian soup was provided to all interested by a renown local chef and supporter of peaceful community gatherings.
