On March 27th, a meeting was convened at the Beach Flats Community Garden to preserve the special community space and support it's gardeners. The well-attended meeting was a discussion between various concerned parties, including Santa Cruz City Parks and Recreation Superintendent Carol Scurich, Reyna Ruiz from the Beach Flats Community Center, about a dozen community gardeners, neighbors and other local supporters. Translation between English and Spanish was important, though there were time...

Domingo Mendoza is on the front page of the Santa Cruz Sentinel today, planting romero (rosemary). He's been told he shouldn't plant, that after this week, he'll no longer have access to the land he's worked for about fifteen years. He pointed out a full grown peach tree in blossom yesterday, and mentioned that he planted it. The Beach Flats Community Garden has had its ups and downs over the years, constantly reminded that the land is leased, rather than owned, that at any point the la...

textCoonerty Uses New Consent Agenda Gag Rule by Robert Norse
At the 3-25 Santa Cruz City Council meeting, Mayor Ryan Coonerty refused to allow members of the public to pull items off the 16-item Consent Agenda for public comment and individual vote. Instead he implemented a "public comment limit" of two minutes for the entire 16-items (or a little over 6 seconds for each item if one wanted to talk on each one). This is the first time Coonerty has so clearly activated this new power of the Council to deny the public the right to speak on nearly half t...

Protests and vigils were held across the nation on March 24th following an announcement the day before of 4,000 dead US soldiers in Iraq. A demonstration was held at the Military Recruitment Center in Capitola, where a Santa Cruz County coalition known as People United for Peace (PUP) demanded "an immediate end to the killing and occupation in Iraq." One woman was arrested for trespassing as she occupied the Army's recruiting office and refused to leave until the occupation of Iraq is over....

textTraffic School For Bikes - An Editorial by Bicicleta Bandito
Santa Cruz, California has just begun a traffic school for "errant" bicyclists. http://www.santacruzsentinel.com/ci_8676416 Perhaps it's too early to venture an opinion on this but my instinct says this is a really stupid idea. Why? Well, for one thing, the reasons bicyclists get cited for traffic violations in the first place only makes sense if you accept the premise that roads are mainly for automobiles and bicycles are an equivalent technology....
