imageCinco de Mayo Street Celebrations Shut Down by San José Police
120_5m-01.jpg
by Sharat G. Lin
During Cinco de Mayo celebrations, residents of San José faced daytime checkpoints, citations, and arrests on a scale not matched by any other festival of the year. By 10 pm the focus appeared to be diverting cars and mostly-Latino youths from the downtown area, effectively evacuating the city center and shutting down street celebrations on two nights....

textDigital colonization: a challenge for change by Tiny aka Lisa Gray-Garcia, Poor News Network
When the gentrifiers come into our streets and neighborhoods and speculate on our rented, leased and owned real estate, we can see our demise coming and we just might have a chance to stop it or slow it down. But when the e-colonizers come into our digital communities or e-estate, we can’t see them. We get spoken for, written about, maybe linked to and referenced, but e-gentrifying is much more subtle, insidious, less clear....

textTribe, Conservation Groups Sue Six Rivers National Forest to Protect Sacred Sites by Dan Bacher
“We participated in good faith in the Forest Service’s collaborative process and we were assured that our sacred areas would be protected and our cultural values respected. It’s now obvious that those were hollow promises,” said Leaf Hillman, Natural Resources Director for the Karuk Tribe....

by Francisco Da Costa
Hundreds gather in the Bayview at the Southeast Commission Facility to vent and formulate plans to address Racial Tensions. The District Attorney's Office tried some, the San Francisco Police Department tried harder - but with all the statistics and rosy wordings - the people wanted more services, better understanding - but most of all Safety for all. The politicians were there - mostly pathetic losers. The Mayor did sent his cronies - mostly standing far away and observing....

“It is ironic that some of the people for responsible for the destruction of ocean resources are the ones that are now telling us that we need to be stewards, even though we have been the stewards of the ocean for centuries,” said Nelson Pinola, chair of the Point Arena Pomo Rancheria. “We need to change this law.” Photo of tribal gathering at Danaka courtesy of Violet Wilder: woman in buckskin dress, Violet Parrish Chappell; in purple, Vivian Parrish Wilder; in pink jacket, Vana Parrish ...

imageMayor Newsom is responsible for the violence perpetrated on innocent Asian Americans in SF
120_part_1.jpg
by Francisco Da Costa
In January 2010 an American Chinese man was assaulted at a Third Street Lightrail hub. He succumbed to his injuries in April. Some of us organized a vigil and the Mayor was no where to be seen. Nor were the many folks that Mayor Gavin Newsom gathered mostly lackeys at City Hall recently - who will jump on any bandwagon to gain their five minutes of fame. I did not see the Mayor at the Human Rights Commission meeting held in China town. There were other focused meetings and the Mayor was no wh...

textSan Francisco makes one more faint attempt to keep HOPE alive at Hunters Point Shipyard. by Francisco Da Costa
San Francisco's Mayor's Office of Economic Development makes one more faint attempt to keep HOPE alive at Hunters Point Shipyard and Candlestick Point. The sell outs were brought in numbers - fed and paid to make some drab statements. Mostly, the same refrain that has been heard before. " We want jobs". " We want housing". Well, that remains to be seen. Lennar has been know to look you in the EYE and LIE. The area is polluted and still under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Navy. We demand that ...
