Dr. Cornel West spoke at the student occupation of the Humanities and Social Sciences building at the University of California Santa Cruz on November 20. Students occupied the building earlier in the day and plan to stay inside until the UC Regents roll back the tuition increases they approved this week. Student fees across the University of California system will raise by at least 5% a year for the next five years if the plan is instituted.

Two more students were arrested by police at UC Santa Cruz on April 3 during the Graduate Student Workers strike. 22 Students in total were arrested while trying to maintain a picket line across the west entrance of campus over the course of the two day strike held April 2-3. UC Berkeley is planning to cut down a grove of 16 redwood trees as soon as March. The redwood trees behind Soda Hall, on Ridge Road and Le Roy Avenue are going to be replaced with the Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation, a privately funded tech design lab paid for by the CEO and Chairperson of the Board of Qualcomm Paul Jacobs.
