text Community in Mourning after UC Berkeley Destroys 60 Trees on Historic Gill Tract Arboretum - by Gill Tract Defense
The Gill Tract community will be gathering at the Gill Tract at 5pm to mourn and plan. Early this morning, 60 trees were cut down on the southern acreage of the Gill Tract. The UC’s move to begin clearing the way for their proposed housing and shopping complex came as a shock to farmers and neighbors, as there is an active lawsuit on appeal in the county courts, contesting the development’s detrimental environmental impact. Knowing the community would mobilize to defend the trees, t...

A group of 60 graduate students led a teach-in and mediation at UC Berkeley’s School of Welfare yesterday in response to racist comments made by a tenured professor. During class on Feb. 10, a tenured white professor, shared statistics citing Black on Black crime as the real cause of harm to the Black community. He then encouraged the class to join him in a rap, claiming that he had been inspired after attending a Black Lives Matter event the prior evening. The rap he shared in class caused...

In early September 2014, the small public park across from the Greyhound station on San Pablo Avenue between 21st and 22nd Streets, a common hangout spot for Oakland locals, was fenced up and closed by the city. This happened just after major construction of a large multi-story residential building was completed on adjacent land recently sold by the Oakland Catholic Diocese. it was clear that the idea was to run off the poor people who made use of the park for the supposed aesthetic pleasure...

Oakland city officials have bragged that the Oakland Police have not shot anybody for 20 months, a streak ended recently when an officer shot at--but missed--a man who was reportedly having a mental health crisis. However, in the last 13 months five people have been shot and killed by law enforcement in Oakland, it just happens that they were not killed by members of the Oakland Police Department.

In September of 2014, the City of Oakland began to make attempts to displace and remove people in public plazas along San Pablo Ave in the wake of the WOSP (West Oakland Specific Plan) being passed. The clamp down by the police on the plazas is thus clearly part of "socially cleansing" the area, while UC Berkeley students mapped out the park and planned where the art would go for a "transition," and city workers erected fences at 32nd and San Pablo ('Triangle Park') and near 21st and San Pabl...

image Bosses ‘fire’ 300 Local 10 members in Oakland after tentative agreement at West Coast port 120_unloaded-ships_0226.jpg original image ( 450x252) - by Cheryl LaBash, Workers World
News broke on Feb. 20 that an agreement between the Pacific Maritime Association — the organization of the West Coast port bosses — and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union would allow full-time work to unload a two-month backup of shipping pending a ratification vote of the union. The PMA had imposed mini lockouts for the past months on the union in an attempt to win a contract that left workers at a disadvantage. But the battle is still on.
