image The liberation of public parks closed for gentrification in Oakland 120_21st-sanpablo-park-fenced.jpeg original image ( 2048x1152) - by Dave Id
In early September 2014, the small public park across from the Greyhound station on San Pablo Avenue between 21st and 22nd Streets, a common hangout spot for Oakland locals, was fenced up and closed by the city. This happened just after major construction of a large multi-story residential building was completed on adjacent land recently sold by the Oakland Catholic Diocese. it was clear that the idea was to run off the poor people who made use of the park for the supposed aesthetic pleasure...

image Bosses ‘fire’ 300 Local 10 members in Oakland after tentative agreement at West Coast port 120_unloaded-ships_0226.jpg original image ( 450x252) - by Cheryl LaBash, Workers World
News broke on Feb. 20 that an agreement between the Pacific Maritime Association — the organization of the West Coast port bosses — and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union would allow full-time work to unload a two-month backup of shipping pending a ratification vote of the union. The PMA had imposed mini lockouts for the past months on the union in an attempt to win a contract that left workers at a disadvantage. But the battle is still on.

text The bottom 40 percent of the United States combined - by Ted Rudow III, MA
Wal-Mart has announced it will raise its minimum wage to $9 an hour in April, and $10 next year, in a move that will impact about half a million low-wage workers. The increase falls far short of the $15-an-hour living wage demanded by workers who have launched historic strikes against Wal-Mart — and reported retaliation from the company for joining the protests. A 2012 analysis found the six heirs to the Wal-Mart fortune have as much wealth as the bottom 40 percent of the United States comb...

Billionaire Anthony Pritzker heir to the Hyatt Hotel family fortune built a 53,000 square foot home completely under the radar. This home which looks like a grand hotel resort and spa is actually home to him, his wife and three kids. He built his own private "Hyatt Hotel" in Bel Air, California in a residential district so he could throw huge lavish commercial events. How was he able to build this without public review? Contacts and campaign contributions.
