Nicole Humphrey, 'Not Racist or Bigot,' on Class and Section 8 Housing

by FRONTLINE in Dallas, TX

FRONTLINE and NPR investigate the billions spent on affordable housing, and why so few get the help they need.

--

Class, Poverty, and Politics

FRONTLINE: But her plan hit a roadblock.

Developer: We thought we were going to have support, and instead the city actually called a public hearing for our property and about 250 angry residents showed up.

FRONTLINE: Some residents voiced concerns about traffic, others about overcrowding in their schools, and some were worried about having low-income housing in their neighborhood.

Nicole Humphrey is a local opponent of the development.

FRONTLINE: What is your concern when it comes to section 8 and low-income?

Nicole Humphrey: Um, the lifestyle I feel like that is goes with section 8 is usually working um single, maybe single moms, or um people who are struggling to keep their heads above water. And it's not ... haha ... I feel so bad saying that. But it's not, um, it's just not people who are, I guess, of the same ... class as us. Which sounds bad, but I don't mean that in a bad way.

FRONTLINE: Some people would say, you know, look, they maybe have not had the opportunities they had, their kids are not going to have the opportunities, that your kids are going to have in this neighborhood. Can they share in that?

Nicole Humphrey: Um, the problem with that is I hear a lot of the unfair of 'oh, we haven't been given this or that or we haven't been afford things that you might have been afforded.' Um, I don't look at multi-millionaires and think 'why don't I have a yacht? why don't I have a private jet?' It's a mindset, I feel like.

FRONTLINE: Do you think that you maybe, are stereotyping the folks ...?

Nicole Humphrey: Oh I totally am, a 100%. It's not, it works both ways. I, I'm definitely not a racist and I'm not bigot, but um I, I think I hold a little bit of a stigma against people who are different. We don't want nomads. We don't want people who don't have roots. I just don't want that to be what my community is about.

Nicole Humphrey is opposed to a new affordable housing development near the McKinney and Frisco suburbs of Dallas. She and other neighbors have said they worry about traffic and school overcrowding.

What a nasty woman. This is exactly why people who are not privileged need assistance...NOT A HANDOUT... but a way to give everyone that chance because the system is rigged to keep certain people down, and that horrible woman is proof

And she really had the nerve to say she's not a racist or a bigot...if you are it admit it...you made yourself look like even more of a fool. Whatever helps you sleep at night honey...

I have never been so disgusted by someone as I am by Nicole Humphrey. As a Texas resident in a suburban location very near her, I hope people know that she certainly doesn't represent the belief system of all of us.

It was so difficult listening to Nicole Humphrey. Does she really think she "earned" her status?

"There's always going to be someone with less, because the fair world doesn't exist and where does that line lie?"

It is sad that Ms. Humphrey is so closed minded and will more than likely perpetuate her close-mindedness to her child or children.

Hey, Ms. Humphrey, when I heard you say this on the radio, I actually yelled an expletive at you while driving. Wanting your kids to have a safe, secure childhood and a decent education is not in any way comparable to wanting a yacht. Anyone who doesn't want all children to have the opportunity for a better life and who thinks those who have to struggle to get what has come so easily to you don't deserve what you have...well, I'll just say you're not a nice person. You can tell yourself you're not a racist or a bigot if that helps you sleep at night, but you're not a good person.

I'll be honest - I wanted to reach through the radio and shake this woman when I heard her story last night on NPR. I grew up nearby in Plano, TX, and imagine she's a good church-goer like most of that area. Unfortunately, good church-goer does not make a good Christian. Nicole, you can't avoid being judged. That's life. That's what us humans do. You can pick the one who's judgement matters most and try your best to be a good person. Locking those who are different out of your community because they don't "fit in", are not "in the same class", will judge you, or will complain because they don't have what you have (assume much?) is morally reprehensible. I'm a white upper middle-class woman, and I'm ashamed to be associated with you. How about some compassion? How about getting out of your comfort zone and actually meeting these people? We're all human beings, and these are your fellow Americans whether you like it or not. Denying them opportunity because it makes you uncomfortable is a horrible action, and it does make you a bigot. Why don't you meet this Section 8 candidate and actually get to know her? Broaden your world, open your heart and hopefully you'll do the right thing next time.

They'll say, "Lord, when did I deny you an affordable place in my neighborhood?" And the Lord will say, "That which you did not do for the least of my brothers and sisters, you did not do for me."

One who is out of touch with the struggle and love of a parent will think that wanting to move out of a bad neighborhood is the same as wishing for a free yacht.

no one asked if you were a racist lol

Does anyone know if Nicole Humphrey is on Facebook or Twitter? She needs to be educated, and to be informed that she has no support of any importance in reality, to spread classism, as some kind of residential right, through her neighborhood. American women must write to her. She does not get the last word on this. It is impactful on an entire federal program, one that has proven successful and enlightened in so many other neighborhoods. Little does she know. For now, there but for the grace of goodness go her own children. But she doesn't mind "going public," so "public" shall she go... We WILL respond...

I live in mckinney, and I posted this article in a popular local mom's group. Nicole Humphrey came on and doubled down to defend herself in that post, saying things even worse than what she said here. She's not going to change her mind, but it's important that this dialogue is finally out in the open. I hear this kind of thing a lot.

I would love to see the screen shots from those posts. Looks like she hid or deleted her facebook now! She was probably getting harassed.

I contacted her via her photography company (because apparently it is ok to be a working mom as long as you don't need the money) and got a similar response. She is absolutely sure she is correct and thinks it is 'hysterically funny' that anyone feels that she is a horrible, racist, classist bigot.
BTW, her company is Shutterview Photography in Frisco Texas. Please spread the word.

I looked her up - she has a work-from-home sideline photography business, as one of the comments mentioned. One of the links on her website is "Giving Back" - the content speaks of how she lost her dad to cancer, so, as a way of "giving back", she's offering free sessions to people who've been impacted by cancer.

She's not a woman without compassion, but compassion in her only activates when she has a direct connection to the negative impact. So, the moral of the story is, Nicole Humphrey represents an all too common problem. I believe we are all obligated to broaden our compassion by fighting ignorance if we are to survive as a society.

What did she say in the mom's group forum? Please quote here.

Looked at Shutterview Photography (https://www.facebook.com/shutterviewphotography/) and I find it interesting that all of the clients in her photos are white. White couples, white babies, tons of white children. Just a side note, even if I agreed wholeheartedly with her, if she had pics of MY kids posted after what she said, I'd be screaming for her to get them off of her page. It really isn't smart to say stupid stuff and be in a business like that. I definitely wouldn't want to use her as a photographer with my children now.

I also noticed that on Ben's page there are lots of shots of their kids as well. Again, Ben, you're putting your children at risk there. I'd pull those pictures or make all of them private.

I detest the C word for women. It's just a nasty, nasty word. But when I hear her say the things she said in the PBS interview, and the worst stuff she's said in other places, the C word is the only one that comes to mind.

A few years ago there was a racist contestant on Big Brother named Aaryn (nicknamed Aryan by watchers) who was also from Texas. CBS now runs a warning before the show that opinions of the contestants are their own and do not reflect CBS's views. It's called the "Aaryn warning" by viewers in forums, because CBS started using it that season thanks to her.

Maybe it's in the water there, but it's in the water a lot of other places, too. Peel Nicole Humphrey's skin and she'd just be another hunk of red meat, just like the rest of us. As my wonderful Mama used to say, her pee is gold just like everyone else. :)
