by Lynda Carson (tenantsrule [at] yahoo.com)
Measure M1 provides sustainable rent increases and just-cause for eviction protections to City of Alameda residents. More than 7,300 Alamedan voters signed petitions to put M1 on the November 8 ballot. A growing coalition of renters, homeowners, landlords, faith leaders, and small business owners support Measure M1 for its balanced approach to renter protections and community stability.
Alameda activists and renters to rally & distribute 10,000 door hangers supporting Measure M1

On Saturday October 29, renters and activists will have a rally in Alameda at 2311 Buena Vista Ave, from 12 noon till 1pm, in support of Measure M1, the renter protection ballot measure voters can vote for on November 8. Around 12:45pm, former Assemblymember and State Senate Candidate Sandré Swanson will be a guest speaker at the rally, to speak in support of Measure M1.

After the rally, it is expected that more than 50 Alameda residents and allies will fan out across the city to distribute 10,000 door hangers in support of Measure M1, and talk with voters about the renter protection ballot measure the voters can vote on that offers the renters some stability, and protection from no-cause evictions.

“After nine months of hard work by volunteers, we are excited to get out the vote and win on November 8,” says ARC spokesperson Catherine Pauling.  “M1 has earned widespread support across the city.  Alamedans want true renter protections and long-term community stability for all residents.”

With Election Day on the horizon, the YES on M1 Campaign will rally with former Assemblymember and State Senate Candidate Sandré Swanson, who has endorsed M1.  Dozens of residents and allies representing multiple organizations will attend the rally and, afterwards, distribute 10,000 door hangers to Alameda residents.

On Saturday October 29, the day of GOTV action will showcase the breadth and depth of the coalition behind Measure M1, which has been organizing Alameda residents for the last nine months in support of true renter protections and community stability. Residents and allies from Alameda Renters Coalition, Alameda Progressives, Renewed Hope Housing Advocates, Filipino Advocates for Justice, and the West End Resident Council will participate in the day of action.  Acclaimed Filipino-American musicians Ben Luis and Chris Planas will perform during the rally as well.

According to the Alameda Renters Coalition, “The YES on M1 Campaign is proud to earn the support of former Assemblymember and State Senate Candidate Sandré Swanson.”

“I have been a resident and a homeowner in Alameda for more than two decades, and I have been fighting for affordable housing all of my career.  I’m proud to endorse Measure M1 in our city of Alameda,” says former Assemblymember Swanson.  “Measure M1 is the progressive choice for true rent control and just-cause for eviction protections.  It keeps families in their homes, right now, and it stabilizes rents for long-term community stability.”

Mr. Swanson served three successful terms as a Member of the California State Assembly.  He was the Chair of the Assembly Labor & Employment Committee and was a vocal advocate for growing the middle class with sustainable jobs.   As a result of his work with at-risk youth, in 2014 Mr. Swanson was invited to the White House by President Barack Obama and was requested to participate in the President’s "My Brothers Keepers" initiatives.

Following the rally, more than 50 Alameda residents and allies are expected to fan out across the city to distribute 10,000 door hangers and talk with voters.
