Sample Resolution to Honor Marcus Mosiah Garvery ~ August 17
Many have no cognition of the contributions by Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey. Preparing for the 100th Anniversary of the publication Negro World, it is time to manifest the good works and vision.
Sample Resolution Proclaiming
August 17, as Marcus Garvey Day
WHEREAS, Marcus Garvey was born August 17, 1887 in St. Ann's Bay, Jamaica and arrived in Harlem, New York in 1916; and
WHEREAS, Marcus Garvey founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) and the African Communities League (ACL) to help improve the conditions under which the black community lived in the United States and the rest of the world; and,
WHEREAS; Among Marcus Garvey's many achievements, his efforts promoting the economic development of his community lead to founding of the Negro Factories Corporation which encompassed cooperative stores, restaurants, and a factory specializing the manufacture of black dolls as well as the founding of a publishing house and the Black Star steamship line; and
WHEREAS, Marcus Garvey was responsible for founding the "Garvey Movement" which, at its zenith in the 1920's, claimed a membership of over three million people in 300 branches world-wide; and,
WHEREAS, The Garvey Movement was one of the greatest mass social and economic justice movements in world history and is recognized as possibly the largest Pan-African movement in world history; and
WHEREAS, Marcus Garvey before his death in 1940 accomplished much as a publisher, journalist, entrepreneur, lecturer, and black nationalist including founding the People's Political Party, Jamaica's first modern political party, and was elected a town councilor in 1929; and,
WHEREAS, Marcus Garvey, for his life's work promoting the economic, social, artistic and cultural well-being and heritage of the black community, was proclaimed by the nation of Jamaica to be its first national hero; and,
WHEREAS,........ recognizes the cultural, artistic, distinct identity and contributions of residents of African ancestry to the vitality of the State of California by memorializing and honoring Marcus Garvey for his accomplishments; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that the ….. hereby urges residents to herby proclaim the next and each succeeding August 17th Marcus Garvey Day in San Francisco, California.
