Santa Cruz Candlelight Vigil to honor the victims of mandated vaccines SB277

The fact that they call this a vigil is a big clue that their response to the law is hysterical. The law just went into effect. No one has died. Vaccines, in fact, have prevented millions of deaths.

Fortunately, most people have better sense than these folks. The only reason these mostly white folks can skip vaccines and remain healthy is because most everyone else is properly immunized. Essentially, these protesters are what's known as "free riders," getting by on the immunity of the population as a whole.

If the numbers of anti-vaccer free riders ever grows too large, we'll lose herd immunity and diseases that have been largely eradicated will begin to sicken people on a scale not seen in generations. Diseases that are virtually unheard of now will return.

People that truly can't get vaccines for medical reasons (not due to foolish beliefs) will become sick first when herd immunity begins to fail. Anti-vaccers will be fine for a while because most of them are privileged and have good health insurance. Eventually, large numbers of people will get sick, regardless, especially the poor.

It wasn't long ago that people suffered and died by the millions with diseases that are easily prevented by vaccines. How quickly people forget.

Do the anti-vaccers support teachers' "medical freedom" to refuse TB tests that are now mandatory for anyone working with children? Imagine all the kids who would would die of TB. You'd have a lot of real life actual vigils then.

How about Christian Scientists who let their children die of curable diseases rather than take them to the doctor? Do anti-vaccers support their medical freedom, too?

Or does the medical freedom they espouse only apply to anti-vaccers?

How about chickenpox parties? Those sound like well-informed healthcare. Bring back leaches and superstition and whatever I hear from the neighbor over the fence. Forget all that peer reviewed scientific mumbo jumbo in support of vaccines.

If these anti-vaccers don't care about public health or avoiding serious preventable diseases, fine, they have that right. Let them home school, or join a charter school with independent study. But keep them away from kids whose parents have more sense.

Democrat Gov Jerry Brown opposes socialized medicine; this millionaire ruling class member is a mouthpiece of the medical profiteering, personal bankruptcy promoting industry. The agro-business water is used to grow or raise thirsty almond trees, alfalfa, beef cattle, and the like, all of which we can do without growing/raising in California.

As to the TB vaccine, one can carry dormant TB and not be able to transmit it, and the most likely carriers are medical people who have worked in TB wards, such as my mother, who was a nurse in a TB ward. I never got TB, although it can be transmitted to the fetus. Her TB was always dormant; I never got TB. People most likely to get TB are undernourished and living in unsanitary, crowded conditions. We are repeatedly screened for TB but there is no TB epidemic in this society at all. I remember having the TB vaccine before I entered high school in 1963 and then a year or so after, they asked us to volunteer for the TB vaccine again! There was no TB in our school and we were all well-fed and living in decent housing conditions. This is all a profiteering racket on the part of the medical industry.

This writer had chicken pox, measles, German measles and mumps as a child, and thus, I now have the immunities to all of these diseases.

Please join us in demanding socialized medicine for all from cradle to grave, with all medical and dental care paid for with our tax dollars, and all hospitals be secular and required to perform free abortions on demand (unlike now where the Catholic hospitals find ways to refuse abortions, even though women's lives are threatened). "Some people who get Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV) get a sore spot where the shot was given. The vaccine used today has never been known to cause any serious problems, and most people don’t have any problems at all with it.However, a vaccine, like any medicine, could cause serious problems, such as a severe allergic reaction or even death."

That language about "could cause" is CYA legalese. The fact remains that the current polio vaccine has NEVER caused serious problems. Not sure how much safer a thing can be, especially when it prevents a disease with a clear history of pain, suffering, and death.  That's not a permanent condition for humanity, however.  Stop vaccinating enough people for polio and it will come back. Just look how the recent measles outbreak was worst in California, especially around Orange County, the state and county with among the highest percentage of anti-vaxxers anywhere.

It is dishonest to say there is no safe vaccine when the current polio one has NEVER caused serious injuries. That one vaccine alone proves that there IS such a thing as a safe vaccine.  It's fundamentally flawed logic to say something IS unsafe (that has never caused serious harm before) because it may or may not cause injury in the future.  The first sign in the post here is only true in the sense that there's no safe dinner fork, no safe zipper, because injury may occur (and those things have injured people in the past).  But no one is advocating banning dinner forks or zippers on that premise.

A stairwell may cause death. A young friend of a friend died when he fell down a stairwell. Surely others have, too.  Something like 100,000 people die a year in this country due to prescription drugs complications.  The list goes on and on of things proven to be far more dangerous than vaccines.

When anti-vaxxers talk about how healthy they are, they are being oblivious to the fact that they are "free riders" on herd immunity. One of the main reasons they are healthy, or don't have a disease for which there is a standard vaccination, is because everyone else is vaccinated. If the overwhelming majority of people in a population are vaccinated, then the odds of anyone getting sick from the disease the vaccine was created for diminishes greatly. When enough people aren't vaccinated, herd immunity fails and people begin to sicken at greater numbers, especially those who are not vaccinated. That's what SB277 set out to do, to end the opt-out for anti-vaxxers as their pseudo-science movement slowly grows to dangerous proportions.

The stories of loved ones dying are almost entirely anecdotal.  People only suspect that's what it's attributed to.  That's why we have something called the scientific method and don't rely on individual observation and unsubstantiated rumors regarding important public health issues.

Some parents stop vaccinating their kids when their kids get a fever after a vaccination, but that's often a normal part of building immunities to these diseases. (I got a vaccination about 8 years ago that gave me a fever for 2 days, but that's the science of it, small doses of the disease introduced to build immunities and prevent a full-on more dangerous outbreak.)  I read that one family that stopped vaccinating after a fever had a kid that got whooping cough which nearly killed him, and they went back to vaccinating their kids again.

One of the main anti-vaxxer sites shows a statistic about government settlements for various bad things relatives attributed to vaccines over a 3-month period in 2015.  There was just one for death, and about 163 for other types of claims. Doesn't mean a vaccine was proven to have caused that death or injury, just that's what the family claimed and the government settled. Say the one death was verified as vaccine related, and deaths that quarter were lower than average, then perhaps at most there were 10 deaths settlements due to vaccines that year.  For the sake of argument, let's say several times that never sought a settlement, maybe 50 all verified vaccine deaths (which they weren't scientifically verified). You're still looking at 0.0005% of the deaths caused by prescription drugs, in a country of 350 million people.  Take away those vaccines, again, allowing herd immunity to crumble, and you're looking at tens of thousands of deaths, probably hundreds of thousands of illnesses, from otherwise preventable diseases. 

Anti-vaxxers like those holding this protest are advocating a dangerous position. Because they are confused about vaccine science, don't trust scientists, and think some harm could come from vaccines, we should return to a darker period in humanity's history when all kinds of preventable diseases ran rampant. That's highly irresponsible.

Because you suspect something does not make it true.  A lot of what's out there in anti-vaxxer literature is all about maybes and suspicions, little documented proof. The overwhelming scientific consensus is that vaccines are safe and have helped us to be a far, far more healthier society.  It's not that much different than the issue of climate change science. Sure, debunkers, hoax people, can point to a factoid or two that contradicts the consensus, but it doesn't change the fact that 99% of climate scientists agree humans are warming the earth.

Yes, vaccines, generally speaking, can have side effects, sometimes. On very rare occasions, people might even die. But, to return to a world where millions of people regularly suffer from preventable diseases, that makes no sense whatsoever.

There was no such thing as autism and Attention Deficit Disorder when I was a child. Now it is an epidemic. You cannot pour aluminum, mercury, formaldehyde and MSG into a body and expect good results, yet that is exactly what many vaccines contain AND BABIES ARE BEING GIVEN 8 VACCINES IN ONE SHOT. That is not just medical profiteering, that is MEDICAL EXPERIMENTATION THAT WOULD MAKE NAZIS PROUD.

The real epidemic in America is not measles, chicken pox, or Hepatitis B. Kind of hard to take comments like the one above seriously when things are stated as fact without backing them up. Maybe there's a reason comments like that don't bother to point to any scientific evidence for such claims. The only links provided are to websites that spout anecdotal evidence. Spend a few minutes to do your own research and discover that the "facts" in comments like that are completely untrue.

There are no major vaccinations with mercury any more, but you'll see that bandied about, as if it were 100% true, too. Already knew that one was bullshit.

Of course, in our polluted world, any and all illness can be attributed to one thing and one thing only, vaccines!!! It's not air pollution, water pollution, emissions from plastics, pesticides, hormones in animal products, or anything else.

Who needs science when you can just KNOW the truth of these things without pesky facts or peer reviewed studies?

If your statements and goals about vaccines were more rational, maybe more people would listen.

Statements: If every other claim you make is easily shown to be untrue, why would people believe anything you ever say?

Goals: If you said, "let's pressure Congress to repeal immunity for pharmaceutical companies that produce vaccines," people could buy into that.

But, instead you scream, "NO VACCINE IS SAFE!" and "NO VACCINES EVER!" which makes no sense and is a great danger to public health.

You care about this issue. Why doesn't your own credibility in this fight matter to you? You'll get nowhere if people can't believe what you say is sane or safe. Yelling alone will get you nowhere.
