California Apartment Association targets medical marijuana users

Oakland - The California Apartment Association (CAA) has been stalking the tenants movement in the Bay Area, and have placed medical marijuana users in its cross-hairs, including recreational marijuana users if the voters approve marijuana for legalization in November.

The CAA has sponsored a bill (AB 2300) that allows landlords to prohibit renters from smoking medical marijuana in their apartments, and the bill advanced yesterday from the Assembly Judiciary Committee. Jim Wood (D- Healdsburg) is the author of AB 2300.

It appears that Jim Wood has received at least 2 contributions from the California Apartment Association totaling $5,600, according to Follow The Money. In 2014 Jim Wood accepted $16,400 from the California Association of Realtors.

Many Oakland renters are protected by Measure EE, just cause eviction protections, and for those protected under Measure EE (know your rights section) the renters do not have to sign a new contract if it is materially different from the old contract.

The CAA has also targeted the renters of Santa Rosa and the Santa Rosa City Council, in an effort to stop any and all reasonable renter protections being considered on May 3.
