Day Worker Center of Santa Cruz Seeks Funds to Build a Tool Lending Library

by via Day Worker Center of Santa Cruz County
The Day Worker Center of Santa Cruz County is asking for your help to raise funds for a Tool Lending Library. We've got the tools, but need your help!

Here's what we'd like to do:

1) Build a shed to store our tools in a safe, clean, and organized way.

2) Provide access to tools so workers can lean on us to help them get jobs done.

3) Expand the lifetime of our tools by storing tools in a dry shed.

4) Provide opportunities for workers who don't have construction experience to learn hands-on skills

We estimate that the shed will cost approximately $3,000, which includes labor costs, wood, plywood, paint, gravel, and miscellaneous tools to complete the project.

BONUS: When you donate to our cause, you can win prizes while helping an organization that priorizes economic opportunity and quality services for Santa Cruz County residents.

Hear our story:

Manuel is a day worker at the The Day Worker Center of Santa Cruz County who, like most workers, arrives at 7am and waits to be dispatched to a job site. Manuel gets hired for a 5-hour yard work job, and while he doesn't have his own tools, he is able to borrow a shovel and rake from the Center's shed. As Manuel returns to the Center after a hard day of work, he commonly finds stacked of tools and it is a challenge to return the tools he borrowed because there is not much space.

The Center currently lacks a reliable shed to store tools, and as a Center that works to provide workers with job opportunities, a place to store tools is invaluable.

The Center works like an employment match center and is an alternative to waiting outside of home improvement stores. The Center, however, is so much more than that.

In Santa Cruz County, the Center stands as one of the only opportunities for unemployed individuals to work until they find long-term jobs. In addition, the Center also provides a variety of programs for its workers, such as job training, ESL (English as a Second Language) classes, and enrichment programs for workers and their children.

Since opening in 2013, the Day Worker Center of Santa Cruz County has come to be appreciated and supported by its workers, their families, and the greater Santa Cruz community.

The Center serves the entire Santa Cruz County area with reliable services 7-days a week, such as house cleaning, yard work, moving, carpentry and painting. Santa Cruz homeowners and businesses can hire workers with confidence to help them with their ongoing and everyday needs.
