"Pacific Pivot" Bully's cruise in South China Sea is a Pirate's PR trick
Last week's US Navy sailing by a destroyer to within 12 miles of a Chinese artificial reef in the South China Sea was a PR cruise that got a principled but stern reaction by Beijing. The US Ambassador was called to the Foreign Ministry to receive a well-deserved warning that such provocative actions by Washington in the future will be met with stronger countermeasures. Interestingly, the US "corporate-bin-Laden" media omitted any mentioning of the diplomatic scolding suffered by the self-proclaimed "lone Superpower"!
The latest display of the "Pivot to the Pacific" strategy reflects the fast-declining USA empire's last desperate try to militarily dominate the Pacific Basin. For 7 decades after the end of WW II, the Imperial regime in Washington had treated that vast ocean as an American lake. But a rising and more assertive China is challenging the US supremacy, and the Mafia bosses don't like it at all; hence they're baring their fangs to try to intimidate the resurgent Dragon.
But the Imperialists in Washington are caught with supersized Hypocrisy at every turn. First, they are accusing China of violating terms of the UN Law of the Sea(UNLOS), an international agreement that had been ratified by over 160 nations, but Washington is NOT a signatory(mostly because USA corporate Capitalist greed wants to impose a 200-mile economic exclusive zone instead of the UNLOS much narrower 12-mile territorial waters provision). So the US protest of Chinese violations of UNLOS agreements is like an outlaw charging that law-abiding citizens are ignoring legal provisions. Secondly, China had never threatened to interfere with lawful commercial navigation in the high seas. Third, the UNLOS provision of innocent passage specifically omitted to guarantee the right of military vessels to conduct provocative sailings close to another nation's sovereign waters. The very fact that US Secretary of War Ash Carter openly bragged about the intent to challenge China's South China Sea's activities back in June clearly exposes the US Navy destroyer's latest sailing as anything but a "free and innocent passage" in international waters.
Most critically, the US Imperial regime should be much more careful about charging other nations as violating international law, because its own Pacific Command HQ and naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawai'i is actually located on an illegally-occupied territory! So the USA should be the last party to accuse other nations as violating international agreements. Until a--protracted---negotiated settlement is finally agreed to by ALL citizens of that strategic archipelago, Washington must refrain from being the self-appointed Global Cop to enforce violations of international law. Isn't this quite elementary, my dear Dr. Watson?
