The Rafael Manriquez Kolectiv presents a special and exclusive showing of a 17-minute extended version of the trailer for the soon-to-be-released documentary "The Resurrection of Victor Jara" by John Summa, John Travers, and Fernando Torres. http://www.vjvive.com/ The Bay Area's own Nueva Canción groups Duamuxa and Madelina y Los Carpinteros will be performing Victor Jara's most emblematic songs in celebration of what should have been Victor Jara's 83rd birthday.

Víctor Jara was a Chilean educator, theater director, poet, singer-songwriter and political activist. He was also a leader among musicians who established the New Chilean Song Movement, integrating Chilean folklore and the use Latin American indigenous instruments, with lyrics of love, peace and social justice. Shortly after the Chilean coup of 11 September 1973, Victor was arrested; viciously tortured and ultimately killed. More than 40 years after his death Victor Jara's voice is still inspiring new generations of singer-songwriters to continue advocating for human rights and a more just and loving society.

Duamuxa - husband and wife, Ricardo Valdivieso & Marci Valdivieso-Manriquez (Rafael Manriquez' daughter), is a musical, creative project inspired by the Nueva Canción, the blues and jazz. Tonight's presentation of Victor Jara's music, one of our most beloved composers, allows us to share songs of soul and beauty with the Bay Area community. Listen to some our music at: http://duamuxa.com/entremedio.html

Madelina y Los Carpinteros. A Latin American music ensemble with a notch in original tunes accompanied with an array of folk instruments. With Madelina Zayas, Fernando Torres, Denis Schmidt and Hector Zapana, the group eclectic repertoire is rooted in the Latin American folk and the nueva canción tradition of entertaining and educating.

Program sponsored by Iris Arts & Education Group.
