San Francisco Public Works Expanded Access to Bathrooms

by D. Boyer
It is common knowledge that San Francisco is one of the stinkiest Cities on the West Coast. The smell is not from pollution, or the Ocean, or the Bay but it does originate from the streets and sidewalks you walk on. San Francisco is very much a tourist destination, and it should be with all the sights and sounds that greet every citizen and tourist daily. And now the San Francisco Department of Public Works has expanded access to clean bathrooms, throughout the City, for both the public and for the homeless.

The smell can water your eyes, and distract you, and can somewhat ruin your visit or commute, so now the San Francisco City government through the advocacy of Michael Petrelis, have created a program called The Pit Stop Program. Additionally the San Francisco Fire Department has agreed to open up their bathrooms to the homeless and anyone else needing a place to relieve themselves.

The San Francisco Public Works has created a program called The Pit Stop Program. It essentially provides a place where people can use a clean toilet with a sink, a place for people to put their dog waste, and a place where needles can be disposed of safely. A map of the Pit Stop locations will be included in this post.

Pit Stop Hours
• Tenderloin - Tuesday-Friday - 2 pm to 9 pm
• SoMa - Tuesday-Friday - 2 pm to 9 pm
• Mission - Open daily - 9 am to 8 pm at 16th and Mission streets location; Tuesday-Friday - 11 am to 6 pm
at 16th and Capp streets location
• Castro - Monday-Friday - 9 am to 8 pm

This is in addition to the already 25 self-cleaning public toilets. The locations of the self-cleaning toilets are:
