California State Capitol ~ Sesquicentennial Juneteenth ~ Honoring US Colored Troops

by Ser Seshsh Ab Heter-CM Boxley
The profound legacy of contributions by people of African ancestry in the State of California remains an open secret. Building on the remaining work left undone by the Honorable Mervin M. Dymally, from sea to shinning sea the journey continues...

Juneteenth celebrations should present on the programs a person(s) dressed in Union Military replica uniform of soldier, cavalry, sailor, nurse to educate the public participants about the Civil War freedom fighting actions of enslaved and non-enslaved African descendants that decisively helped to gain the freedom for the masses of enslaved folks and helped preserve the Union of the United States = "the double victory!"

They also helped to make Juneteenth, 13th, 13th, and 15th Civil Rights constitutional amendments possible.

If cannot find a re-enactors then purchase the replica uniforms-outfits and let someone wear it as part of the Juneteenth program. Cannot do that then reserve a time and space on the program for talking about the Civil War African descent freedom fighters.

One hundred and fifty years ago this month of May 2015, the Civil War fugitive President of the Confederacy Jefferson Davis had been chased down and caught in Georgia.

United States Army troops and sailors were dispersed to the Mississippi River in Adams and Wilkerson Counties [Natchez and Woodville] (Third Colored Cavalry), Western Louisiana and Texas to seal off all possible routes for the fugitive Jefferson Davis and other fugitive Confederates to escape to Texas and Mexico to join with the French conquers of Mexico and continue the Civil War.

In so doing Union troops occupied a number of places in Western Louisiana and in Texas along the Gulf of Mexico making Galveston their headquarters.

A great number of the Union army regiments sent out to Texas were United States Colored Troops and sailors. Of course when the Union Army occupied Galveston and Houston in June of 1865, Union General Granger issued a General Order among several, informing the people of Texas about the surrender of the Confederate General Lee and that the enslaved people were free according to the Emancipation Proclamation issued by the President of the United State effective January 1, 1863.

This was done on the date of June 19, 1865 and the Juneteenth Freedom Party was on.

The Port of Galveston Island continues today as a symbol, one of the many Civil War milestones in our ongoing journey from Slavery to Freedom Commemoration Parties across the United States and beyond!
