Mattie Scott lost her son to gun violence. A few months ago, while caucusing with other Bay Area community activists in the back room of an Oakland coffee house, she launched an idea She said, “There is one season each year when people are most apt to listen to the message of non-violence. It is Mother’s Day week end.” Henceforth, the idea for “A Mama’s Cry: Stop The Gunfire!” was born. On Saturday afternoon, May 9th, the entire Bay area community is being invited to lend comfort, support and encouragement to families who have lost loved ones to violence. Those impacted are invited to bring pictures of family members and friends who have fallen to this plague. The event will begin sharply at 2:00 p.m. and end at 4:00 p.m. It will be wheelchair accessible. A Mama’s Cry: Stop The Gunfire! will be unique in that community members from Oakland, San Francisco, Richmond and other locations will be gathering. Pastor Wanda Johnson of the Oscar Grant Foundation, Brenda Grisham of the Oscar LaVell Jones Foundation and Mattie Scott of Healing For Families And For Our Nation and Mothers In Charge will be speaking along with the family of the late Richard “Pedie” Perez and others. Poets and musical guests will also be in attendance. Councilmember Annie Campbell-Washington will be speaking as well. The event is being sponsored by Reverend Harry Louis Williams, II of Hood Movement 21, the office Oakland City Councilmember Annie Campbell-Washington, Jack Bryson of SEIU and the Oscar Grant Foundation, The Christopher LaVell Jones Foundation, Mothers in Charge and Healing 4 Our Families And For Our Nation. The entire Bay Area community is invited to this special time of support and embrace. Please bring friends and family members to this time of peace and community.
