A wise African American leader once said that a people without the knowledge of their past history, their origin, and their culture is like a tree without roots. While we would all hope that our society would provide every child with a nurturing foundation that includes a profound understanding and respect for their roots, we know that is not the case. That is why Movimiento Estudiantil Chicanista de Aztlan (M.E.Ch.A.), Black Student Union (B.S.U.), Logrando Exito Academico (LEA), and Latino Student Congress (LSC) have united to host a Youth Conference at Santa Rosa Junior College on April 25th from 8-4pm. The conference is completely free and open to 6th-12th grade students and their parents, as well as college students and community members. It will be conducted in English and Spanish. At a time in our country’s history when young people are becoming more conscious about critical issues facing their communities, it is important to provide them with education and mentorship.

The organizations are also looking for the community’s support in the form of a tax-deductible donation or volunteering. The conference goal is to raise $7,000 by March 20, 2015. You can help in developing the next generation of leaders. The organizations will happily provide donors with a taxpayer identification number. Checks can be mailed to MEChA de SRJC c/o Rafael Vazquez EOPS Department 1501 Mendocino Ave. Santa Rosa, CA 95401. Donations can also be made into the Santa Rosa Junior College Account “Fulfilling the dream.”
