Aii Native Diabetes Prevention Conference
American Indian/Alaska Native and Canadian First Nation health activists meet to combat diabetes.
2014 PATHSTAR Alcatraz Swim Week members gave a workshop (PATHSTAR Alcatraz Swim Program: Swimming for Life, One Stroke at a Time) at the American Indian Institute 17th Annual Native Diabetes Prevention Conference (January 25-28, 2015) in Phoenix, AZ. The conference brought together health advocates from American Indian, Alaska Native and Canadian First Nation communities. Native Americans have the highest rate of diabetes than any race or ethnicity, according to the American Diabetes Association. PATHSTAR participants (l-r): Elizabeth Best (Colville Confederated Tribes, WA); Joey Cohen (Confederated Colville Tribes, Okanogan Band, WA); Shelli Martinez, (Confederated Colville Tribes, Okanogan Band, WA); PATHSTAR Director Nancy Iverson, M.D.; Travis Bessette and Theresa Bessette (Colville Confederated Tribes, WA). The annual swim week is a component of a year-round program that encourages healthy nutrition and active lifestyle practices.
