Anti-Eviction Mapping Project Maps 12 Wins of 2014
While often the maps of the Anti-Eviction Mapping Project depict systemic causes and effects haunting San Francisco Bay Area's eviction crisis, this new map released by the AEMP instead depicts 12 wins that the San Francisco anti-eviction movement has achieved in 2014: http://www.antievictionmappingproject.net/wins2014.html. These wins have been achieved through different means, but largely through combinations of direct action and legal representation.
The wins include those of North Beach Urban Green tenants, tenants at 2880-2898 1/2 23rd Street who were being evicted by Ash Gujral, Ana Gutierrez and the tenants on Lucky Street, Section 8 tenants at 741 Ellis Street, tenants at 1049 Market, Tom and Patricia who were being evicted by Kaushik Dattani, Theresa Flandrich of North Beach, Renita Valdez of the Mission, Lisa Gonzales and her four-generation family, 98-year-old Mary Elizabeth Phillips also being evicted by Urban Green, poet Diego Deleo from Italy, and lastly, Benito Santiago and the tenants of 151 Duboce.
These wins have occurred upon a backdrop of losses. Nevertheless, they show us that it is possible to fight an eviction and win. They also show us that buildings in which none of the tenants take buyouts, and in which all tenants unite in fighting through direct action and with legal support, are much more likely to succeed.
