Moving Forward From Plastic Bags
Although California is making strides in respects to plastic bag waste, I feel we must completely do away with plastic bags altogether. There should no longer be an option to pay 10 cents a piece to still be able to get plastic bags for groceries and other things.
"California's Plastic Bag Ban: 6 Things to Know" published October 1st, 2014 harps on California Gov. Jerry Brown signing the nation's first statewide ban on single-use plastic shopping bags, following the lead of more than 100 California cities and counties. Although it says it does not apply to non-food retailers such as clothing and electronics shops, nor does it apply to the plastic bags provided at grocery stores for produce and meat and this needs to change. This ban needs to apply to all stores. I also believe that the legislation should not allow customers to still be able to buy a bag for ten cents a piece. Considering we are only at a 3% percent recycle rate of plastic bags, recycling is not the route to go. Lastly, The American Progressive Bag Alliance, a coalition of plastic bag manufacturers are trying to soon overturn the ban on single-use plastic shopping bags and people must not let that happen.
