Militarization of Police

by Anna Walker
Local Law Enforcement has been able to get their hands on military grade equipment either through the 1033 program or as a hand me downs directly from the military. This has caused the death rate to rise. Some people have made suggestion on how to handle militarization of police so that is does not get too out of hand. However, we have to wait and see what will happen.
Police having access to military equipment either through the 1033 program or hand me downs from the military itself has caused quite a stir as of late. It is easy to forget that this is happening because we all have a hard time facing what is right in front of us. If we do not find a solution that will help eliminate or a least control it soon, militarization could reach the point where we may no longer be able to control it.

Since the rise of militarization there also seems to be a rise in deaths. The death rate was at 404, but we can all assume that it is on the rise. People have made suggestions on how to help improve the situation, however, it will be up to congress or even the individual state to enact them. It maybe best to start with the people in the communities because right now there seems to be a split in perspectives. Police see their equipment as a way to control crowds while the people see them as a way to create a rise out of a situation so that cops do end up using the equipment. It might be a wise idea to retrain the cops so that they are more accommodating which may lead to them not using their equipment that much. There may be more possible solutions as this topic gains more momentum, but for now those are some good jumping off points.

We may also never know if the solutions will work because of the different outlooks on this issue. This is something that needs to be shown and be out in the open because that may be the only way people will talk about it.
