Pass the Tenant Protection Ordinance NOW

by M. Hennings
Updates to my previous article regarding: Speculation and skyrocketing rent prices are pushing out Oakland Tenants. Oakland tenant rights are laughable, as is the City of Oakland's code enforcement (unless you're a small homeowner)
I submitted an article on 10/03/2014 regarding my recent experiences as an Oakland Tenant.

Since that date, I have continued my fight to get the City of Oakland Building Inspectors to inspect the safety issues at my building, and to get the Property Management Company to comply with CA laws.

As of 10/10/2014, the city issued a temporary STOP WORK ORDER for all permitted and un-permitted work at this address. The stairs have been marked 'unsafe'

Unfortunately, this happened a little too late. On Thursday evening, I slipped and fell down these stairs and injured my back. I have been asking (begging) someone to come out and look at these stairs since 09/11/2014. Several Building Inspectors have ignored me, and a couple have even insulted me... refusing to acknowledge that these stairs were an issue (or saying they were under' investigation')

I am in a lot of pain. Lower and upper back. The property manager is threatening me with a 'cease and desist' for 'refusing access' to my apartment (both times she cited were the day after I had fallen down the stairs, and needed to see a doctor).

I am essentially being threatened with an eviction from a property management company. They claim it's not retaliation, but the company owns MANY properties, yet has time to show up my apartment almost every day. The work that need to be done is not urgent or pressing. I complied with the first notice, and no work was done. Now I'm expected to let her back in once a week for inspections (that are not related to the necessary repairs)

This isn't harassment? Retaliation for demanding that they renovate these apartments legally and safely?

I have lived here for almost 6 years. They have owned the building LESS THAN 60 DAYS and have been issued
- 3 Stop Work Orders (work without permit)
- 1 Total Stop Work Order (all work, regardless of permit)
- 1 Restricted Use (the stairs that were 'repaired' are not safe)

They have also been cited for failure to dispose of construction materials correctly, and are not using RRP Certified employees in a building that may have lead paint.

And I'm the one who faces eviction? Where are the consequences for these investors who showed up to make a quick buck?

All Oakland Tenants, STAND UP AND FIGHT.
