Mission District rally to stop luxury towers at 16th and Mission Plaza – “No Monster in th

by Rubble
A rally and festival was held late in the afternoon at the 16th Street BART Plaza Saturday, October 4th to fight big money development Prop G marchers completed their march down Mission St., joining the rally at the end of their action to keep up multi-faceted housing activism. Speakers, theatre, and live music livened up the square. Hear bilingual talks from a life-long Mission resident, a local merchant, and a resident of a local Single Room Occupancy hotel which will be demolished in the process. (20 minutes)

A high-rise luxury tower is planned for the Northeast corner of Mission/16th, with rentals starting from 3,500-5,000 per month. It will change the plaza outside Bart, and demolish several buildings including the Walgreen’s and Burger King. Another plot of land is ready for development at 16th and Van Ness. The two of these will likely force the Redstone Building out of business. At least another big development is planned near the corner of Capp and Mission, right near at least one SRO hotel. Marshall Elementary School will be dwarfed, and the entire character of the neighborhood changed.

The entire area between Mission and Van Ness will be permanently taken over by big money interests.
Police have taking a heavy hand “cleaning up” the plaza from street people who frequent it, along with heavy repression on demonstrators.

Tenant organizers have said that the Mission is the most rapidly growing real estate market in the country if considering the cumulative rise in real estate values in recent years. A broad coalition of residents are fighting the development, fighting for the heart of the Mission. Meetings are being held at Station 40 on Thursday evenings last I heard.. Check out details at plaza16.org.
