Is American Israel’s Stooge?

Dear President Obama,

I wonder if you are aware of how the common people of the Middle East refer to America? This is something that is actually really easy to learn. Social networking has created a global village for the exchange of views and ideas.

Just in case you are not aware, I want to share with you what I read over and over on facebook and as comments on news items. The common people of the Middle East, in their diasporas and in their various countries of origin, call America “Israel’s stooge.” And that’s when they are being nice. When they are getting more to the point in plainer language, they call America “Bibi’s b____.” I am sure you know which B word I am not spelling out for you here. It is the common witch word that starts with a B. They mean it as allegory in that hard rap reference to a woman who has not yet begun to envision her own liberation.

The interesting thing, is that they don’t call you “Bibi’s b____.” I myself am proud of you for your criticism of Netanyahu. But criticism is not enough.

Last night I watched the DVD “King, A Filmed Record; Montgomery to Memphis,” with tears streaming down my face. If you have never seen it, or if you haven’t seen it recently, I think it is time. I think it’s time to think about King’s words. I think it’s time to think about America’s values. I think it is time to think about how very hard we have worked, and sacrificed, and bled for our values of justice, of equality, of freedom for all. It is time to remember what King said, “We are all tied together in a single garment of destiny... An inescapable network of mutuality... I can never be what I ought to be until you are allowed to be what you ought to be.”

American values. We need to reflect on American Values. We need YOU to reflect on American Values. The values of justice, of equality, of freedom for all. And we must remember that our great leaders, our men and women of vision understood that none of us are truly free, until all of us are free. All of us. All of us. All of us in the entire global village.

These are American values. Justice. Equality. Freedom. And yet we support Israel. We arm Israel. We use our veto power to protect Israel, while Israel does not support justice, equality, or freedom for all people. Israel does not support justice, equality, or freedom for people of color within or without Israel’s borders. In fact, Israel does not respect the legally and internationally recognized borders with neighboring countries on nearly every side. And Israel treats the Indigenous People of Palestine, worse than how our black citizens were being treated when our great leader, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., led those world changing protests t from Montgomery to Memphis. Protests, in fact, that led to the possibility, to the eventuality, to the actuality of you becoming our president.

We must remember that, “Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.” And we must ask ourselves, whose side are we on? Whose side are we on? Are we on the side of the oppressor, or the oppressed? Are we on the side of Justice? Of Equality? Of Freedom? Or are we Israel’s stooge? I want to know, really, I want to know, are we really Bibi’s b____?

I hope not. I hope not for our sake. I hope not for all the countries that border Israel. I hope not for all the people of color, of minority ethnic and religious status in Israel. I hope not for our brothers and sisters, the Indigenous People of Palestine. And I hope not for the Jewish People of Israel. Really, who wants to live with hate and fear in their heart? Wouldn’t we rather all be free?

Let’s remember our core values. Let’s find a way to speak them out in public; and more importantly, make them real in the world.
