Los Medanos College (LMC) will host a moderated discussion with Janet Mock, a bestselling author, speaker and advocate for trans women’s rights. “Elevating Diversity: Gender and Sexual Identity” will take place on Saturday, September 13 at 5:00 pm in the LMC Recital Hall. She will be signing her book following the discussion.

The college is located at 2700 East Leland Road in Pittsburg. Tickets are available: $5 student (with ID) and $10 general public, at the door and online: http://www.losmedanos.edu/lmcasdiversity/.

The public is encouraged to attend. Free and easy access parking is available in LMC’s Parking Lot C for this event.

Janet Mock is the author of Redefining Realness: My Path to Womanhood, Identity, Love & So Much More. Currently, she travels the country speaking about her book and her mission of celebrating self-definition and championing girls and women from all walks of life. She is a contributing editor at Marie Clair magazine and has appeared in the Washington Post, New York Times, Salon, Slate, Feministing, Colorlines and more. She was featured in the HBO documentary The Out List.

Janet’s appearance is sponsored by the Los Medanos College Associated Students (LMCAS), the college’s student government.

In addition to the evening discussion, there will be an afternoon conference, hosted by LMCAS, exploring the importance of diversity in education, the workforce and in the community. The conference will provide a “safe space” for collaboration, learning, and examining our unconscious biases to gain a deeper understanding of the various issues facing the LGBTQIA community. The conference will run from 1:00 to 4:30 pm in the LMC Library Community Room (L109). Tickets are available and include BOTH the conference and the Janet Mock discussion.
