Families of those Killed by Salinas Police Demand Resignation of Chief McMillin

by via Alliance for Dignity, Respect and Justice
On September 5, a group calling itself the "Alliance for Dignity, Respect and Justice" held a press conference at Delicias Bakery in Salinas announcing their set of demands following the four killings of Latino men by Salinas police this year. Delicia's is the location where police shot and killed Carlos Mejia on May 21 when he was walking with garden sheers. The Alliance for Dignity, Respect and Justice includes family members of those killed by Salinas Police. They are demanding: 1- The resignation of SPD’s Chief of Police, Kelly McMillin; 2- The firing and prosecution of all officers involved in the killing of the four Salinas Latino residents; 3- A vote of no confidence for Salinas Mayor Joe Gunter. The group has also announced they will be seeking petition signatures from businesses and community members in support of these demands, and businesses who do not support the demands will be avoided.

Alliance for Dignity, Respect and Justice Press Statement

"We want Respect, Dignity and Justice for Hernandez, Mejia, Ruiz, and Alvarado, who were killed by Salinas Police Department Officers:

"We have waited patiently for the Salinas Police Department and the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office to release all the details of the recent police involved shootings that caused the deaths of four members of our community. We have waited calmly for charges to be filed against those officers responsible for these murders. We have been waiting for Kelly McMillin’s, Chief of Police, firing or resignation. Justice, Dignity and Respect can wait no longer.

"Our “public servants,” including the City Manager, and our justice system have failed us. From these individuals we can only expect backroom deals, sabotaging of our efforts to get justice for Frank Alvarado, Osman Hernandez, Carlos Mejia, and Angel Ruiz, and covering up for those responsible for the deaths of our four community members. It is now our sole responsibility to come together as a community to put an end to police terrorism in our city. We hope that every family, neighbor, and friend can join you and us to ensure that justice is done."
