Student Workers Reach Historic Contract Agreement, UCSC Finals Week Strike Canceled

Without a contract since September, Student Workers represented by UAW Local 2865 finally reached an agreement with the University of California on June 3. As a result, a finals week strike called for at UC Santa Cruz has been called off. Student workers have won a new contract with wage increases, a joint labor-management committee is to be established to regulate class sizes, and undocumented graduate student workers will have new access to scholarships to provide equal pay. Their social justice demands were addressed and met, which has long included demands for all-gender restrooms for transgender and genderqueer students.
Here is a list summarizing the gains:

-17% wage increase over 4 years. (but with nothing for this past year so, 5% for next year, then 4%, 4%, 3%)
-Joint labor-management committee to create and implement a system wide scholarship for undocumented grad students providing equal pay and benefits to our members
-Joint labor-management committee to regulate class sizes (a major issue in many departments)
-Guaranteed access to all-gender bathrooms for transgender and genderqueer students
-Guaranteed access to lactation stations for nursing mothers (special facilities with refrigerators to store breast milk, etc.)
-50% increase of childcare subsidy (from $600 to $900 a quarter for quarter system schools and from $900 to $1350 for semester schools)
-Childcare subsidy now covers children up to 13 years of age (previously, up to 5 years of age)
-Paid maternity leave increased (6 wks paid leave for birth parents w/full benefits extension possible on quarter campuses that likely reaches 3 months; 4 wks paid, 2 weeks unpaid for non-birth parents; and non-retaliation agreement)
-New contract language guaranteeing non-discrimination for members who take maternity leave
-Paid parental leave (for non-birth mother parents) increased from 2 weeks to 4 months plus 2 weeks unpaid.
-(Some) Outstanding ULP's and Grievances resolved
