Mimi Soltysik Steps Up to Run as a Socialist for State Assembly in LA County

Emidio “Mimi” Soltysik has stepped up to take on the challenge of bringing socialist ideas into the discourse for election to the California Assembly for District 67. Soltysik is the candidate of the Socialist Party (SP). He is running against a field of Democrats and Republicans headed by Autumn Burke (Dem.) Soltysik lives in Los Angeles and the district includes Venice (which is part of L.A.), Marina del Rey, Inglewood, and El Segundo.
In an interview with the Independent Media Center, Soltysik said he is, “focused on issues that effect the working class.” When the local SP looked at the possibility of running a campaign, they decided that the time is now to, “step up, to speak out, and to share the ideas, to put them out into the public dialog. And to step up to the Democrats and Republicans,” said Soltysik.
At the top of Soltysik's agenda is adequate compensation to workers for their work. “I am campaigng for $15/hour minimum wage for Los Angeles County,” said Soltysik.
Improved public transit is also high on Soltysik's agenda. He wants, “to make all forms of land transportation safe, clean, and publicly funded. Los Angeles covers a huge area and public transit is really inadequate. Workers deserve safe travel between home work and school. They often spend long hours on buses and subways and they pay that price out of their own pockets. Transport is a basic necessity.”
Soltysik also thinks there needs to be improvements to air travel at LAX, which is part of the district. “At the moment, air travel is very toxic and wasteful of energy. We need to develop cleaner forms of energy for air travel.” LAX is a major source of air pollution in the district.
Soltysik believes improving train travel deserves federal funding and that heavy freight should move on separate rail lines, whenever possible, to reduce tack congestion and to increase the safety of passengers.
“City planners should always consider using the distance between housing and work places and should consider and should consider the safest possible roots for bicycles and pedestrians,“ said Soltysik.
On education, Soltysik believes in publicly funded education for all and that students, “ deserve the best education from early childhood through university. The students deserve safe classrooms in well maintained buildings, and teachers deserve good wages and respect. Schools need quality meal programs and basic healthcare clinics in every school.”
Climate justice is another issue of emphasis. Soltysik and the SP believe that, “environmental sanity is simply not possible under a capitalist economic system - a system that's predicated on accumulation. It seems like every day we're passing some new tipping point or threshold, or some species is becoming extinct. Ecological devastation has to stop now.” The Democrats and Republicans seem like they are trying to, “ negotiate with nature,” said Soltysik. “This is not a negotiation. The [environmental] benchmarks that are being set don't cut it.”
Soltysik also advocates major reform to the criminal justice system, “Workers suffer under a system of law that hits the poor with the heaviest penalties for small crimes, and let's the rich get away with grand theft...The one percent have the means to buy justice.”
“Capitalism is not a system that's designed to take care of the needs of people. It takes care of the needs of a tiny percent and everyone else suffers. It's just unacceptable.”
Soltysik said the SP feels a sense of urgency, in addressing these issues.especially with climate change.
Soltysik believes that, “the public is more receptive to socialist ideas than ever.” Several polls have found dramatically increased interest in socialist ideas among the general public following the financial crisis of 2008.
Soltysik knows he is facing an uphill battle. Our opponents, “are going to out raise us 200 to 1. We have to look at what our capacity is, what can we handle? And then, develop a strategic plan and select areas where we can have an impact.”
Soltysik is campaigning person to person using phone banks, public literature tables, going door to door, and other person to person contacts, as well utilizing social media.
