AmeriCorps NCCC Team Arrives to ‘Get Things Done’ at Presidio

SAN FRANSICO, Calif. – A team of 10 individuals, known as Gold 6, from the AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC will spend just over eight weeks (April 1-May 26) working with the Presidio Trust to complete several eagerly anticipated projects.

The Presidio was established as a fortified military base in 1776. It was decommissioned as an Army base in 1989 and transferred to the National Park Service in 1994. Recently, the Presidio Trust has become fully self-sufficient and no longer relies on federal funding for park operations. The Presidio Trust strives to preserve the rich history of the Presidio and to promote its use as a National Park.

The team’s first major project is the construction of six new garden plots in the community garden, which will be open to the public. Over the course of the eight weeks, Gold 6 will support many other projects throughout the park including participating in volunteer drop in days, and assisting with Earth Day/Arbor Day and Memorial Day activities.

Gold 6 member, Kevin Kellup says, “the Presidio has a great reputation for sustainability practices. I’m really looking forward to bringing what I learn home with me to help my community in New Orleans.”

The AmeriCorps team is excited to participate in the Presidio’s rich history of service and to contribute to the development of the park. Already the team has completed several big and small projects, including the removal of several hundred feet of old fencing on the grounds of the Presidio Institute in the Fort Scott area of the park.

The AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) and its FEMA Corps units engage 2,800 young Americans in a full-time, 10-month commitment to service each year. The program is currently celebrating their 20th Anniversary. AmeriCorps NCCC members address critical needs related to natural and other disasters, infrastructure improvement, environmental stewardship and conservation, and urban and rural development; FEMA Corps members are solely dedicated to disaster preparedness, mitigation, response and recovery work. The programs are administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). CNCS is the federal agency that engages more than five million Americans in service through its AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, Social Innovation Fund, and Volunteer Generation Fund programs, and leads President's national call to service initiative, United We Serve. I bet they are not getting paid anywhere near the wages a government unionized employee receives and the Presidio grounds crew is represented by the Laborers Intl' Union of NA. The Presidio "Trust" is well known as anti-union and fought years against recognizing the union and signing a contract for the maintenance staff. These NCCC kids are now providing them cheap labor and eliminating full time employment for local people. Another service of the Obama Administration and "Liberal" Nancy Pelosi. In fact the Director of the Presidio Trust is the onetime assistant for Pelosi who wrote the Presidio Trust legislation that created his job. Nice work if you can write it.
