L.A. Fracking Moratorium Leaps First Hurdle, Heads to Full City Council

by Food & Water Watch
LOS ANGELES — “Food & Water Watch commends Councilmembers Cedillo and Huizar for their support of a moratorium on fracking in Los Angeles during the February 25 Planning and Land Use Management (PLUM) Committee hearing. The moratorium motion will head to the full City Council for a vote on Friday, Feb. 28, where we look forward to celebrating its passage as the only way to protect Angelenos’ public health, environment and property from the inherently dangerous practice of fracking.
“We congratulate the courageous leadership of Councilmembers Paul Koretz and Mike Bonin who stood up for Angelenos and all Californians by introducing the motion to place a moratorium on fracking within the City of Los Angeles and along the City’s water supply route, and Councilmembers Parks Huizar and Blumenfield for seconding the motion.

“As Governor Brown has failed to act, cities like Los Angeles are stepping up to protect residents. Nationwide the evidence is clear: No amount of regulation can make this fundamentally destructive and toxic drilling safe.”
