Juan Gonzalez, co-anchor of Pacifica Radio's Democracy Now!, has produced "Harvest of Empire", a new documentary film based on his book of the same name. On Monday, September 16, PASMC will show the film at the Unitarian Universalists of San Mateo, 300 E. Santa Inez Avenue (at Ellsworth) in San Mateo.

The 90-minute film focuses on how U.S. policy in a number of Latin American countries has made life and survival extremely difficult for everyday people in those places - and has contributed to the increase of immigration that many Americans find controversial but for which few realize the true motivations.

Gonzalez plays a "role" in his film, describing his early life in his home country of Puerto Rico and the adjustment to a new world in New York. Others tell similar stories about Argentina, El Salvador, Mexico and other places where the political, economic and human rights situations drive people in search of a better life.

Harvest of Empire won the Imagen Foundation Award in 2013 for Best Documentary Film or Television of the Year.

The event begins at 7 PM; admission is free, contributions are welcome. Coffee, other beverages and snacks will be on hand.
