Bacon Fest Protest

Date:
Saturday, August 31, 2013
Time:
11:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Event Type:
Protest
Organizer/Author:
Priya Sawhney
Location Details:
San Jose Night Market at 1411 Maybury Road, San Jose

One week after Earthlings marched all over the world, Direct Action Everywhere (http://www.directactioneverywhere.com) is teaming up with local organizers to take on one of the most horrendous examples of the glorification of violence: the annual San Jose Bacon Festival.

The Bacon Festival is part of an International Bacon Day, which includes events all over the world. The local event has already received glowing press in the San Jose Mercury News, the Silicon Valley Business Journal, and on the local NBC News affiliate. We will be there, however, to tell another story: that bacon is NOT FOOD. It's VIOLENCE.

The attendance for this event is likely to be more than 2,500 people. From the event's blog page: "At the festival, there are lots of food trucks--all offering special bacon dishes for $5 or less! There is a Bacon Cooking Competition, a Bacon Beauty Pageant, a Bacon Parade, a Bacon Square Dance, bacon games and more!"

The event will go from 11am-10pm.

The demonstration is planned for the morning part, from 11am to 1pm.

Location: San Jose Night Market at 1411 Maybury Road, San Jose.

Signs, which will say: "it's not food, it's violence" and "freedom is every animal's right" will be provided.

We want the messages to be unified so please DO NOT bring your own signs.

To mourn the pigs killed for this event, please wear all black or if you have an Earthlings shirt, please wear that.

We will not be showing graphic pictures at this demo.

Also, the goal of this demo is not to try to convince people to not attend. We hope some people will reconsider, but that is not the main goal of this protest.

The goal is to confront/challenge the societal norms that make animals in to objects and glorify the eating of murdered pigs.

Please park on the street outside of the Night Market and expect to walk a bit to the demonstration site, at the entrance to the Night Market on Maybury Rd. Cross street is D.O.T. Way. You likely have to look for parking closer to N. King Road, which crosses Maybury Rd.
