Sneaking in money for a San Mateo Jail? No way!

by Californians United for a Responsible Budget
SB 445 was written as a bill about the pharmaceutical industry.

But this week, with no warning, the author pulled a "gut-and-amend" - a sneaky parlimentary maneuver to turn it into a bill that would send an unspecified amount of money to cover jail construction expenses.

This is a last-ditch effort to fund a new jail - and we're on the very brink of stopping them. But we have to act today.

Here are three things you can do to defeat SB445 (Hill): Revenue Bond Financing of Prison Construction:

1) Email the Assembly Public Safety Committee

2) Call the Committee

Sample Script: I am calling to request that you vote against SB 445, Senator Hill's new jail construction bill in Thursday's Public Safety Hearing. This is a sneaky attempt to fund a new jail construction - the last thing we need!

Help us pack the Assembly Public Safety Committee at their hearing this Thursday. We need your voice there to speak out an oppose this terrible bill. The meeting on Thursday, August 13th in room 127, time TBD.

We did it! 24 hours ago we asked you to take action on a sneaky "gut and amend" jail expansion bill. Just now, the Assembly Public Safety Committee killed the bill with no support. The bill didn't even go to a vote!

We need to keep the momentum going, Senator Hill's bill isn't the only expansion plan moving forward in California. Did you know CDCR has plans to build thousands of new prison beds? Help us stop them today!

One of the best ways to stop these prison plans is to show how prisons will damage our health and our environment - for people in prison towns, prisoners, and family members.

We need as many different people as posssible, to comment on the Environmental Impact Report - by Monday!

If you know someone who lives near one of the prisons slated for expansion, or experts in traffic, air quality, endangered species, water quality, or other environmental issues, please let them know.

Click here to tell the CDCR know that California cannot build its way out of prison overcrowding:

Please forward this email on to anyone in Amador, Riverside, San Diego, Solano & Sacramento County that can help us defeat these new beds and keep an eye out for tomorrow's action alert.
We are 100% volunteer and depend on your participation to sustain our efforts!
