Mayor's Public Safety Task Force Member is "fine with junkies dying"

by The Dude
The City of Santa Cruz's Public Safety Task Force Member Steve Schlicht is quoted in an online thread as saying
he is "fine with junkies dying somewhere else. Outside the county is fine by me."
We have serious problems with someone who has been appointed to Mayor Hilary Bryant's Public Safety Task Force
writing in an online forum (facebook thread) that he is okay with "junkies dying."

How can we have objective and thoughtful consideration of these troubling issues if one is so blatantly biased and
completely and callously compassionless. Isn't this person trying to get to the bottom of core issues?

We see that none of the others on the "task force" has any background with drug addiction services or social services at all for that matter. If this is a gauge of the thinking of these people then those folks who're needing help as they face addiction and homelessness are in serious trouble. We see a complete lack of real interest in these problems and a lack of reality based solutions. What was the Mayor thinking appointing such a careless person to this "safety task force?"

We ask for a public statement and apology from both Steve Schlicht and from the mayor.

Here is the smoking gun.
§Background
by The Dude 2
The City's website describes the task force: "The Santa Cruz City Council created the Public Safety Citizen Task Force (Task Force) to provide a platform for the community to come together to better understand our current public safety concerns and recommend actions we take to improve the quality of life in Santa Cruz. The Task Force consists of community members, business owners, educators, and safety experts and broadly represent the community. Task Force members will work together over the next six months to identify and explore the underlying safety concerns we face as a community and present their independent findings and recommendations to the City Council."

"The Task Force convened officially on Tuesday May, 7 2013 at 6pm at the Civic Auditorium."

In a recent public safety "survey" created by the task force, the public was asked to vote on safety concerns most important to them, and the list of options was strongly biased and included pre-suggested choices such as: substance abuse, mental illness, homelessness, homeless service center enabling, needle exchange, while omitting obvious choices such as rape (see: https://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2013/06/10/18738231.php)

Members of the task force included no homeless people or homeless advocates:

a. Jeff Cole, Fire Captain, City of Mountain View

Counseling Center

How often do TBSC types publicly admit they are in it for the death?
by Jack London
No apology is enough........Steve Schlicht has shown himself a callous Sociopath......He needs to be fired! Why is everyone so lenient about this guy?
by don't needle me
First the Bike Dojo fiasco and now this. No wonder SC has so many problems with such poor choices by Bryant.

Insert foot in chat hole. Rinse, repeat.

I guess this also the reason for killing the Needle Exchange too. Maybe junkies will die from Aids. Overlooking the fact that rising Aids rates from reusing needles, means that next time someone's little kid steps on a needle, that kid will get Aids.
by that's rich!
Hey Steve,

You have done such a great job for Bryant, Comstock, and TBSC;
how much would it cost for you to make me look like an idiot too?
Also, considering TBSC's round the clock screening and deleting of comments they don't agree with by their many admins and the fact that this comment is still up right now, 5 days later, I guess they are ok with this, too. It does seem right in line with their usual rhetoric, so I guess it would be.
by wtf
At least she's smart enough to not say these things publicly :)

Reading about Emmanuel P. "Dexter" Cube in http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2010/06/02/18649646.php led to http://www.sec.gov/news/digest/04-25.txt and http://www.sec.gov/litigation/admin/33-8202.htm and I was wondering if there was any new news about the record of TBSC members. Obviously, given their local influence, if not de facto governance via policy direction, such information is in the public interest.

Mr. S is not happy that his FB comment was "leaked"

http://www.santacruz.com/news/2013/07/30/anger_over_leaked_facebook_post/
by news staff
Activist Brent Adams, who’s criticized TBSC in the past, says the comment “lacks a realistic approach to drug addiction,” and shows larger problems too. “The task force is tasked with getting to the root of the problems,” Adams says, “but what we’ve seen to this point is they’re not interested in the roots of problems, just the same old story.”

Schlitt says that it was a closed discussion and that people are making noise about nothing.

“What transpired in the conversation was between the people in the conversation,” Schlitt says. “It was reprehensible someone would take me out of context.”

by Schlicht Head
There is no acceptable context for the comment Steve Schlitt made, and I'm guessing that's why he didn't/couldn't explain why he said it in the santacruz.com article.

He should be relieved from his position on the public task force immediately.

I'm wondering why there are no comments being posted on the article.

Is santacruz.com not allowing them to be posted?

...allowed my comment to be stored, awaiting moderation. The site does look at email addresses and will reject comments based upon the wording in the address. So I have to presume the readership doesn't care about his statements.

If Steve Schlicht is really the director of marketing communications and information technology for Take Back Santa Cruz and also really a brand management and marketing communications consultant... the best brand communication spin he can manage, to counter the ugly comment now gaining fame, is a (non-denial/non-repudiation) hand wave on santacruz.com?! I smell FAIL.

Are people still abusing the title of Director, post-bubble?
he's certainly a busy little bee....

http://www.cleanupsantacruz.org/2013/07/22/the-inalienable-right-of-bodily-functions/

I want to also point out that while I’m not taking credit for this getting done, I’m happy to point and note that I brought this issue up at a public safety task force meeting over a month ago. I actually debated the idea with city manager Martin Bernal at the meeting (briefly), as I anticipated his reasoning for the lack of 24 hour accessibility (past vandalism issues and costs) and I pointed out the fact that the costs were just being absorbed by city departments like Parks and Rec and Public Works having to pick up human waste in the environment (not to mention the bad PR of volunteers picking it up), and that cost was likely higher than any vandalism or maintenance costs associated with having at least (1) public bathroom with 24 hour access located near the downtown area. Apparently, Martin agreed with me enough to green light this new “pilot program”.

Steve explains the 'context' of his controversial comment.

Oh boy. Somebody copy it before he comes to his senses.

by Clean Up the Task Force
"And it’s not that I lack compassion for junkies, I just have more compassion for the 99% of Santa Cruz residents who aren’t junkies. I don’t wish junkies would die. But if they choose to die, I wish they would do it somewhere else."

What a sociopath Steve Schlicht is.

http://www.cleanupsantacruz.org/2013/08/02/the-pathetic-state-of-social-service-activism-in-santa-cruz/

And he is complaining he doesnt get paid!!!

Could you imagine if he did get paid for his "work"?

I guess for him addicts make bad choices, and he makes all good choices, of course.

This guy needs to resign immediately if has not already.

He's quite the class warfare fiend.

by iNeedTheLaughs
out of context?
it was a private comment between other bigots. i feel cheated the public found out.
you wrecked my secret homeless jobs project.
Steve, if that's an example of a TBSC marketing director's common sense spin control,
why not try:
"some of my best friends are junkies"
or "you ruined my secret project with heroin pushers to offer free hotshot OD's out of town"
or "it was my idea to outsource medical care at the jail, and the resulting deaths have opened up more room at the jail"
or "Comestock made me do it"
or "the CIA lied to me about needles of mass destruction"

i like how everybody is taking credit for Micah's portapottie.
$16,000 to poop. and NO GUARD in that budget. in 2010 Ed Frey provided an all night portapottie to the people of Santa Cruz at no cost to the taxpayer, and the homeless sleeping nearby guarded it at no cost to the taxpayer as well.

hey Steve, it is only around $100 a month for a portapottie, you could actually DIY one yourself.
but if you want TBSC to support it, you may need to put a gallows in the back for junkies who can't afford to OD.

but my first observation in reading his non mea culpa is that if you want to claim to be a branding and social media expert, it's probably not a good idea to dig yourself into a deeper hole than you're already in.

I don't even know where to begin but that is truly a pathological rant.

Typical TBSC BS though of getting caught with the hand in the cookie jar and trying to blame and deflect it onto other people (without just putting on big boy and girl pants and accepting any responsibility).

by Steve's Life Coach
Steve claims:
"I’ve had a number of new business leads contact me who appreciate my position and my work on the task force, and want to discuss ways of working together. So thanks for the free plug and the free publicity. Maybe I should run my mouth more often."
http://www.cleanupsantacruz.org/2013/08/01/karma-works-in-mysterious-ways/

Steve, you are wasting your time on junkies. The REAL money is in beating and killing black kids in hoodies.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70uStFuBxaI

Also, have you considered teaching yoga? I have never heard of anyone so adept at sticking their foot in their mouth. Running your mouth is a good metaphor, it's like you have both feet in there and you just keep jogging away!

by theRealIssue
while it is fun to poke fun at steve there is a more dangerous idiot loose in City government:

"city manager Martin Bernal at the meeting (briefly), as I anticipated his reasoning for the lack of 24 hour accessibility (past vandalism issues and costs) and I pointed out the fact that the costs were just being absorbed by city departments like Parks and Rec and Public Works having to pick up human waste in the environment"

http://www.cleanupsantacruz."org/2013/07/22/the-inalienable-right-of-bodily-functions/

at least steve gets what Bernal did not. we need a City Manager with some basic understanding of how to do his job.
who is also willing to fire a lot of the clueless dept . heads, like shoemaker.

just think if steve had posted this instead.
"i don't care if Martin Bernal has a job, just as long as it is outside the County"

and what about the inalienable right to sleep?
800_untitled.jpg
He was better off out of context from what I can tell.
I'll paraphrase.
Steve Schlict "Let's ride the levee to discourage this from happening"
KK "But, Steve Schlict, that won't stop the people from OD'ing"
Steve Schlict "Hell, I don't care about that. I'm fine with them dying, I just wish they would go somewhere else and do it"
Does that sound pretty close?
by Paul
800_untitled2.jpg
Let's make a little joke about adding the needle that he was using when he died to their little needle map that they keep :)
Or how about a David Letterman style top 10 which includes, you guessed it- ""Finding a body along the levee"!
That will get people rolling every time!!!
by Schlicht Head
As I said previously, there is no acceptable context for the 'fine with junkies dying' comment, and the whole conversation in context shows that Steve Schlitt was lying (in my opinion) in the Santa Cruz Weekly.

The SC Weekly article said:

“This person went into a private Facebook group and sent it in a letter to city council,” says Schlitt, adding that he doesn’t have anything to apologize for. “The comment was taken out of context.”

http://www.santacruz.com/news/2013/07/30/anger_over_leaked_facebook_post/

No, Steve, the comment wasn't taken out of context.

You really should have just apologized.

Take Back Santa Cruz should also apologize to the community.
Other than being reported here and on santacruz.com did this story appear anywhere else?

the local media simply doesn't report anything negative about TBSC. as a matter of fact, local tv media likes to quote TBSC spokesperson analicia cube whenever there is a local crime quote needed.

TBSC doesn't have to apologize because they are, to use a football term, dominating the field. they are setting the agenda, they have the numbers, they have the media, they are controlling the argument and the perceptions.

on the left? disorganization. intergroup fighting and backbiting.

until indybay folks start working together with coherent ideas that all well-presented, organized, TBSC will just do like they're doing. getting people elected, setting the table and getting their bullshit hateful agenda passed and we'll all be the worse.
It has been pointed out before that Dexter Cube, one of TBSC founders, is a convicted financial fraudster. He has been banned from working in the the securities industry. This is a Fact and can be verified by anybody (for free) at http://www.sec.gov. Just enter Dexter's full name (Dexter Emmanuel Cube) into the search bar on the SEC website, and two documents will be presented detailing his illegal actions. He is not from Santa Cruz.

People have posted this here before, and Annalicia Cube, Dexter's wife and co-conspirator in TBSC, reply-posted that it was "a virus link" - another lie from the Cube family.

Dexter himself said that people who criticized him for breaking laws "must be racist".

Finally, why was Dexter smiling from ear to ear during the "community grieving" event that was partially televised right after the two officers were killed? Maybe he was smelling the donations that would be rolling in to TBSC ??

ALWAYS follow the money for every issue. TBSC's nonprofit finances must be scrutinized. The Cubes should not be allowed to handle funds at all. Are there any paid positions at TBSC ? Who are TBSC's donors, and to whom does TBSC give ? Do they hire any outside contractors who subsequently "kick back" a percentage of the contract to the decision-making person at the nonprofit ? This is, and has always been, extremely common.

The USA's non-profit system is being thoroughly abused. False causes and straw men are being created, excessive fear is being fomented, and, resultingly, money flows. Rich, indignant, little old ladies (you know what I mean) who want to be recognized and feel important are being duped into giving, and money is being stolen. Please see the new book: "With Charity For All". Very important.

The current round of self-serving social engineering occurring in Santa Cruz is being attempted by a cabal of radically hypocritical "progressives" who see themselves as culturally elite - witness PredPol (silver-spooner nepotists Coonerty now wants to become rich off crime) , Desal-UCSC-Rotkin-ChamberofCommerce, etc. They are acting in concert with real estate investors, financiers, U.C. , and State/National Democratic party forces. Security and PI companies like First Alarm and the law enforcement workers unions are drooling at the "law and order" opportunities currently being synthesized - 911 taught them about the goldmine that is the scared public.

Rotkin wants to cut down 3000+ more redwood trees at UCSC so he can teach more 18-20 year olds how to use the internet to slander and attack people they don't like, using gender and/or race as the "front", or "cover". Please see the book "Confessions of An Economic Hit Man" by John Perkins (he spoke in Santa Cruz a while back) - this really captures a lot of what is going on here.

FOLLOW THE MONEY and THINK FOR YOURSELF, don't just echo the talking points of deceivers and manipulators who try to tell you what you should think.

A little about me:

I am a virtual marketing tool box
I help people turn their ideas into brands
I have over 15 years of corporate marketing communications experience serving life science and technology companies in Silicon Valley and the Bay Area
After graduating from Virginia Tech with a BS in Marketing Management, I began working in the outdoor retail industry, where I managed a number of outdoor retail shops. When I relocated to the Bay Area to manage Western Mountaineering in San Jose, I began to transition my career out of retail and into technical publishing.

I began working for Genentech in their Regulatory Affairs department, doing technical publishing on new drug applications to the US Food and Drug Administration. While at Genentech, I was part of the team that participated in the first electronic drug submission to the FDA (for Herceptin™). After leaving Genentech, I began working for Incyte Genomics of Palo Alto, California. As part of their corporate marketing communications team, I developed “sell sheets”, brochures, managed trade show logistics and booth planning, and managed a number of ad hoc, internal marketing communication projects.

After leaving Incyte, I began working for Coderant Life Sciences in San Jose, California. As a start-up software development company, they required a wide range of marketing services which I was responsible for. After spending 3 years with Coderant, and after doing some project management work for the University of California Santa Cruz, I began working for Technology Vision Group (TVG), an international business development company that produced a number of international life science events, in addition to launching a new online meeting application to support events.

In 2008, I left TVG and took a position as marketing director for Effone Software in Sunnyvale, California. I was brought in to help them launch Formopia, an online Software as a Service (SaaS) forms tool for email and website data collection. Shortly after the product launched in 2010, I left to pursue other consulting opportunities that became available to me. I began doing ad hoc marketing consulting for a number of select clients in 2010 and I still work with a number of them today on an ongoing basis.
