San Franciscans Rally to Oppose Cuts to Social Security Cost-of-Living Protection
Demonstrators Say: Social Security is Our Right, We Will Not Give Up This Fight!
Hundreds gathered at the Federal Building in San Francisco on July 2 to protest the proposed Chained CPI, and to send a strong message to Senators Dianne Feinstein and Nancy Pelosi “Do Not Mess with Our Social Security, and Expand Medicare for All!” After surrounding the Federal Building, demonstrators covered blocks as they marched to Post & Market Street. In 50 cities around the country, similar demonstrations took place and fired up the fight.
Pauline Brooks, of CARA, opened the rally and sparked up the crowd. “Don’t mess with my Social Security, my Medicare, my dignity – leave it alone. We’re sending a message across this country, No Chained CPI.” The proposed Chained CPI (Consumer Price Index) would rob beneficiaries of cost-of-living protection. From 2015-2033, that would be $89.2 billion stolen from recipients. This would cut the benefits of all beneficiaries, including current retirees, disabled workers, and dependents.
Tom Rankin, past president of California Labor Federation gave a history of the attacks on Social Security, and his message to legislators was, “Listen to the people – not people on Wall Street."
