BART Workers Prepare for Looming Strike
June 26, 2013
By Alex Emslie and Peter Lollo, KQED
Bay Area residents are one step closer to a commuting nightmare as BART employees, represented by the transit agency's two biggest unions, authorized a strike Tuesday night. The vote was nearly unanimous. If negotiations continue to stall, the system -- which carries an average of 400,000 passengers a day -- could shut down Monday.
The impasse is centered on worker and rider safety issues raised by Service Employees International Union 1021, representing maintenance workers and electricians, and Amalgamated Transit Union 1555, representing station agents and train operators.
