Rosenbergs Executed 60 Years Ago. Hail the Heroic Rosenbergs!

By Steven Argue

Sixty years ago today, on June 19th, 1953, New York Jewish Communists Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were murdered by the U.S. government. They were accused of supplying secrets to the USSR for the atomic bomb. Their trial was a sham filled with anti-Semitism, anti-red hysteria, and perjured testimony. Perjured testimony, racism, and anti-red hysteria were also used in Mumia Abu-Jamal's trial. Mumia is currently a political prisoner in the United States.

The Rosenberg trial was a sham, but for me it would not down-grade my opinion of the Rosenbergs if I knew they supplied the USSR with the secrets for atomic weapons. Those who helped the USSR achieve a nuclear arsenal did a great service for humanity. A continued nuclear monopoly by the United States would have meant historic defeats for the world's working class. The U.S. was the only country crazy enough to drop nuclear weapons on two civilian cities as it did at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, murdering 240,000 human beings. Had the U.S. not feared Soviet retaliation, it is likely that the U.S. would have incinerated Vietnam, China, and Korea in nuclear death and destruction. As it stood, the U.S. war against the Vietnamese people murdered three million people and the U.S. war against the Korean people murdered four million people. In addition to preventing a nuclear holocaust in Asia, nuclear parity was key to keeping the U.S. from destroying revolutionary Cuba.

More recently, the U.S. invaded Iraq under the false pretenses of Iraq having something to do with September 11th, and of Iraq developing weapons of mass destruction.

In reality, Iraq’s secular and pro-woman government never had anything to do with the anti-woman Islamic extremists of Afghanistan. It was in fact $8 billion dollars in U.S. military aid that overthrew the secular and pro-woman PDPA government of Afghanistan and brought the Taliban and Osama bin Laden to power. Today, the U.S. supplies weapons to the same type of Islamic extremists in Syria trying to overthrow Syria’s semi-secular government and opposing Kurdish independence.

Likewise, it was the U.S., and not Iraq, that had the weapons of mass destruction. This includes depleted uranium that has irradiated Iraq and is today causing birth defects and death.

The U.S. invasion of Iraq devastated the country, put a death squad government in power, has undermined women’s rights and empowered religious fanatics, devastated the Iraqi economy, not brought about any real democratic rights (protesters are shot down in the streets), made millions of people refugees, and killed over a million people. If the U.S. invasion of Iraq has taught the world anything, it is the fact that countries in the cross hairs of U.S. imperialism just may need atomic weapons to defend themselves from the United States.

This lesson was not lost on North Korea. In the so-called Korean War, their country lost 4 million people as the U.S. and the U.S. imposed dictatorship of South Korea rounded up all leftists and suspected leftists and executed them and drowned the Korean people in oceans of burning napalm. In response to North Korea’s nuclear self-defense, the United States and UN have imposed draconian economic sanctions against North Korea that are hurting the people. It is the right of the Korean people to develop a nuclear defense without an imperialist economic blockade. US / UN Hands off North Korea! End the Sanctions!

Trotskyists have deep criticisms of the North Korean government, just as we did of the USSR after Stalin took over. But while advocating political revolution to bring both socialism and workers democracy, we also fought for the defense of the gains of the October Revolution from imperialist attack. If the Rosenberg's were "guilty", they gave their lives for that same cause.
