Uhuru Furniture & Collectibles 25th Anniversary Celebration

by Uhuru Furniture (uhuruinternet [at] gmail.com)
Uhuru Furniture is a project of the African People’s Education and Defense Fund non-profit organization (APEDF) as well as part of a long history of community programs coming out of the Oakland Uhuru House addressing the disparities faced by the African community. Nationally APEDF has numerous current programs including the All People’s TyRon Lewis Community Gym, Kids Fit Program, Uhuru Health Festivals, Uhuru House community centers and Uhuru Jiko .

Uhuru Furniture & Collectibles proudly announces our 25th year on Grand Avenue in Oakland in support of African community economic development, self-reliance and human rights.

We welcome all of our shoppers, furniture donors and volunteers to join us for our 25th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday July 13th from 6-9:30pm at the Kehilla Community Synagogue 1300 Grand Ave, Piedmont, CA. We will be enjoying food from around the world, African cultural performances, presentations by Uhuru Movement Chairman Omali Yeshitela, on the 25 year history of Uhuru Furniture and of the future Uhuru Jiko commercial community kitchen. Families welcome! Please RSVP.

Conditions in Oakland for the majority of the African community have remained brutal over the past 25 years. The lion’s share of the City of Oakland’s budget goes to the police department while virtually nothing goes to economic development. The result is a lack of economic opportunities that has a devastating impact on every aspect of life for Oakland’s black community.

A 2007 study by the Alameda County Department of Public Health stated: “Compared with a White child in the Oakland Hills, an African American born in West Oakland can expect to die almost 15 years earlier.” (http://www.acphd.org/media/144757/lduc-execsum.pdf)

This year, we are working to transform the Oakland Uhuru House to hold an Uhuru Jiko commercial grade community kitchen and the Akwaaba Hall.

The significance of Uhuru Furniture stores in Oakland, Philadelphia cannot be overstated. We have contributed to building powerful African People’s Education and Defense Fund (non-profit) programs as well as other programs that pre-date APEDF. We take public positions on the issues affecting the African community. We put forward a tremendous product and have saved tons of furniture and household items from going into the landfill by picking up and re-selling donated items.

APEDF and Uhuru Furniture have a tremendous appreciation to our thousands of shoppers, donors and volunteers. YOU are what make Uhuru Furniture the thriving, dynamic African economic development institution that it is! Thank you!

As always, we pick up donations fast, for free and in a one-hour time window. Tax-deductible!
