“Education before the Celebration” event in Santa Clara County, California featuring Dr. Joy DeGruy.

Dr. DeGruy, internationally acclaimed researcher, educator, author and presenter is heralded for her groundbreaking book, Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome which addresses the residual impacts of trauma on African descendants in the Americas. She will lay the ground work for understanding “Cognitive Dissonance: America’s Legacy of Enduring Injury and Healing” during the afternoon session.

The morning session will be conducted by Santa Clara County Black Infant Health (BIH). The presenters will explore “Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome: It’s Impact on the Health Outcomes of African American Families”.

Continuing Education Units are available ( BRN, CME). Lunch will be provided. Vendors will be on hand during the noon recess.

Workshop Objectives:

· Understand structural inequalities that affect African Americans and their communities historically and currently.

· Select and apply strategies that enhance empowerment for African American families at risk for poor health outcomes.

· Understand the cultural, ethical and other related issues that present barrier to assessment and intervention while working with African American families.

· To learn more culturally appropriate health interventions that facilitate trust while working with African American Families and communities.

· Understand the theoretical background of trauma and its continuous effect on the mental and physical health of African American families and communities.
