Why California Taxpayers Should Support the Wal-Mart Strikers

Last week, non-union Wal-Mart employees began the first “prolonged” strike in the 50-year history of the nation’s largest employer. Last October and November, Wal-Mart employees across the country participated in a series of one-day strikes and walkouts against the company in support of a minimum $13 per hour wage, more predictable scheduling and an end to management retaliation against employees who speak up at work.

Walmart Workers Launch First-Ever 'Prolonged Strikes' Today

The Nation
Josh Eidelson

May 28, 2013

Walmart employees are on strike in Miami, Massachusetts and the California Bay Area this morning, kicking off what organizers promise will be the first “prolonged strikes” in the retail giant’s history. The union-backed labor group OUR Walmart says that at least a hundred workers have pledged to join the strikes, and that some workers walking off the job today will stay out at least through June 7, when Walmart holds its annual shareholder meeting near Bentonville, Arkansas.
Organizers expect retail employees in more cities to join the work stoppage, which follows the country’s first-ever coordinated Walmart store strikes last October, and a high-profile Black Friday walkout November 23. Like Black Friday’s, today’s strike is being framed by the union-backed labor group OUR Walmart as a response to retaliation against worker-activists.
After previous one-day strikes, San Leandro, California, Walmart employee Dominic Ware told The Nation last night, “We’ve seen that Walmart is trying to hold out the best that they can. So I’m planning on going on strike as long as it takes.”

Walmart Strikers Solidarity Action
Jobs with Justice
Saturday, June 8th
12pm-1pm
Walmart Store in Oakland
8400 Edgewater Drive
Coliseum BART or Hegenberger exit off 880

Tryphena Douglas from San Leandro, CA is one of them. She makes $8.65/hour and is on strike because when workers like her speak out against poverty and lack of respect on the job--Walmart retaliates. Join Tryphena in taking action.
Tryphena and other strikers from the Bay Area and all across the country have embarked on the “Ride for Respect” caravan to Bentonville, Arkansas where the Walmart shareholders will be holding their annual executive meeting on June 7th, and they’re stopping off to protest at Walmart stores along the way. Keep up with the “Ride for Respect” on Facebook, and join the conversation on Twitter with the hashtag #walmartstrikers.
Now is the time to let the strikers know you stand with them by joining a solidarity action right in our town. How many stores and cities can we show strikers have support in?
Besides the Oakland Walmart on Saturday 12pm, you can also join actions at the Richmond Walmart, 1400 Hilltop Rd this Thursday 10am-11:30am and San Jose Walmart, 777 Story Rd this Friday 10am-11:30am.
Sign up here to help walk strikers back on the job when they report for their shift next week. Let's make sure Walmart doesn't retaliate.
And don't forget to sign the petition. Contact Jobs with Justice SF at solidarity [at] jwjsf.org for more information.

I have lived in Arkansas all of my life. Not once has WalMart forced me to work for them or shop in their store. It is interesting that the movement is called OUR WalMart. Are they saying that they OWN WalMart? And why $13.00 an hour? Why Not $25 or $40 per hour? Why dont the workers band together and start their own business? No business exist to provide you with a job. And isn't it interesting that Californians are coming to Arkansas to demand more money?

If you folks hate Walmart so much and hate working for em,Then just quit. Many Unemployed Americans would be more then happy to fill ya space and earn that wage at the moment.Might be Minimum wage, but it beats being unemployed.Just be happy y'all have a a job, cause so many right now do not.Instead of protesting ya employer, why don't y'all just get back to working an earn ya money.
