An Amazing Opportunity for Creative Housing/Mixed Use/Unclaimed & Gorgeous
I'm encouraging development of the remaining double-decker clump of the Bay Bridge at the east end -- for creative mixed use housing and supportive services.
I don't know where to go with this, but somebody does. The remaining piece of the old Bay Bridge near the East Bay end of the bridge is scheduled for demolition and removal. Drive by and check it out! It would be fabulous for housing/shops/services (even parking). Fun! Inspiring views! It's been done in Europe for centuries -- shops and apartments that gradually develop over the bridges of river cities. The concrete slabs and iron bracing left constitute a multi-story piece of dramatic created land, scheduled to be scrap and trash. Instead, it could be developed -- why not? -- with connectors to land and/or to the new bridge, which will also permit bike and pedestrian access. Car and truck service are possible, but if that's risky, boat service is also possible. There would be quake risk, but where isn't there in California? Risk similar to existing housing in the Bay Area is a big improvement over the greater risk of speeding vehicles pouring into the Bay in a collapse of the old bridge. Its remnants, scheduled to be torn down soon, constitute an amazing, inspiring spot that would be a shame to lose. Check it out. Tell someone in a city planning office or housing department; tell an architect, a creative developer, or someone at UC. It's a dramatic possibility for creativity.
