Occupy Oakland Celebrates One-Year Anniversary, 10/10/12: photos & video

On October 10th, 2011, Occupy Oakland announced itself to the world with a large rally in Oscar Grant plaza. That night, the first tents went up in what would become a flourishing encampment in front of City Hall. A week later in 2011, a second camp sprang up in nearby Snow Park by Lake Merritt. To mark the one-year anniversary since that first rally confronted economic and social injustices in the East Bay and beyond, Occupy Oakland celebrated with an evening of food, speakers, live music, and a slide show in Snow Park. That slideshow ran late into the evening and highlighted a wide selection of photographs from the encampments and the many actions organized by Occupy Oakland and allies, including Occupy the Farm this summer in Albany (video below).

Further actions are being planned locally for the one-year anniversary of the Oakland police raid of the Occupy Oakland encampment on October 25th, 2011. A call is out to march and reclaim the plaza. The same day in New York City, the home of the Occupy Wall Street movement, a march is planned in solidarity against the police attacks on Occupy Oakland.
